I have been using CS3 since they released the beta version. I haven't had very many problems with it. However,I found a last minute glitch when I open Simply Moments CD and try to open any of the JPEG files, it tries to pull it in as a RAW file. If I remember to change it to JPEG at the bottom each time, I can open the file in CS3. All of the PSD files open without problems in CS3.
Has anyone had this problem in CS3? Have you found a solution?
Thankyou,
Deri

Hi ...

Are you using Mac or Windows and which Operating System ?

Wendy :)

I didn't install Beta, Deri, and haven't gotten the new version yet. This is absolutely not right, though---Could you hop onto the Adobe boards, and see if anybody's experiencing this in the "out of beta" (They won't answer questions about beta on those boards, but if you asked it--there'd be an administrator who might know.) Sorry I don't.

I have not had this problem with CS3. I have a Mac so I use Bridge and everything opens just fine in CS3.

Hi,
sorry, I forgot to say which platform I am running on. I have a MacPro, with the twin dual core processors from Intel. I can't begin to wonder why it would read JPEGs as RAW files, unless something is messed up in my Preferences.

I've been running the beta on windows and haven't had any problems (other than some instability).

I run windows-under edit, windows, preferences, file handling...under file compatibility, see what you have checked.....assume your first one is checked (Prefer Adobe Camera RAW for JPEG Files) and you would need to uncheck it if you want to open JPEGS as JPEGS. If you want to open JPEGS under RAW, leave it checked.

The ability to open jpeg files that way is an enhancement under CS3. (you can edit the jpegs like you used to raws in CS2)

Have fun!

If the program is going to open the JPEGs in Camera RAW, shouldn't it pull it in as a JPEG into Camera RAW instead of a RAW file?

Sorry that I was unclear, you can now open jpgs and tif files in ACR. The files are NOT coverted to Raw, rather the controls of camera raw are now available to the jpgs and tiffs.

If your issue is that the jpgs files are actually converted to RAW the format, then I don't know what's going on. It was my understanding that was not physcially possible from what I've read. You might want to post on the Adobe forum and see if others have the same problem.

Thanks so much for your response. I did do as you suggested and unchecked the box for editing JPEGs in camera RAW. I normally don't work in JPEG as all my pictures are brought in as RAWs. I do see the benefits for editing JPEGs in Camera RAW to edit nondestructivly. It is too bad that it tries to bring the JPEG in as a RAW file for editing (in Camera RAW). A better idea would have been to allow Camera RAW to bring it in as a JPEG format. Perhaps the nonbeta version will have worked this out.
Once again, thanks for your advice. This got rid of an irritating problem.

Another option is to FILE>OPEN AS>, click on your JPEG and then change the OPEN AS to CAMERA RAW.

Note it does not change the jpg to RAW, you are only working in the RAW envivorment.

If you open up your jpeg, work on it in ACR and then go to save it, it does not show the file with a raw file extension. You can save it as jpeg, tiff, pds amoung a few others.

Well, I'm going to uninstall the beta. Ordered CS 3 today, so will await it's arrival.

Have fun!

Thanks for the additional info.
You have alot of knowledge about CS3. Are you ordering from Adobe? I do want to get mine ordered as I am sure the Beta will run out soon. I learned Photoshop on CS3, so it is all I know (which isn't a huge amount). CS2 didn't work well on my IntelMac, so after 1 day (tells you how patient I am), I downloaded the Beta of CS3 and haven't looked back.

Hi all

I'm looking at Adobe's site regarding downloading the upgrade from CS2 to CS3.

Unfortunately, the UK site will only download the Mac upgrade. So, as I am on Windows XP I thought I'd try and download it from the US site.

Clever boys at Adobe - they spotted that I'm in England and so wouldn't let me download from the USA.

Then I noticed the upgrade price on the US site and realised that here in the UK we are being charged 50 per cent more for the same thing - and you can't say it's packaging for the UK and shipping costs etc because it's all electronic.

Makes me mad as I feel I am being ripped off :(

Oh, BTW if you want the Windows upgrade then UK residents have to download the German upgrade - English version !!

Rant over.

PS - I've even managed to post this on the wrong thread as well !!!!

Hi David ...

I would be inclined to hang on and wait until the boxed upgrade is for sale :)

Good point, Wendy.

I haven't downloaded the upgrade as shortly after my post the "mail" post arrived and with it this month's Advanved Photoshop magazine. In it there is an article on the new features in CS3 which started me wondering just how many of them I would actually use right now.

Anyway, it won't be too long before I am sure to be able to find the upgrade being offered at a better price - that's if I still decide to go for it.

Derid, I ordered my CS 3 UG from Adobe yesterday. I've been running CS 2 on windows and have loved it. No problems. CS 3 was buggy on my machine, but I'm hoping they have worked all of that out on the non-beta.

I used code AIGA07 which I read about on several sites. I received $30.00 off of the UG price. I read on another site that some have actually gotten -$60.00 when they check their credit card billing on-line. (the statement they got from Adobe showed, -$30, but credit card had less). I don't know if I will be that lucky, but I can hope. My charge hasn't posted yet. I do hate what the manufacturers do with their pricing. I was formerly a PSP user. Used them since they were sharware, but got fed up with their pre-order special pricing on PSP X, they non-special pre-order people got even cheaper. Since they had a 30 day trial, I returned the software and got my money back..and went to Adobe.

Photoshop TV and Photoshop Killer Tips are must views if you've not gotten adicted to them yet. They have CS 3 articles all of the time. I've taken several free tuts on it also. I believe it was Photoshop Training that had a free CS 3 course a month or two ago, but I do not know if that is available.

Have fun~

You're all NOT going to believe this. I was reading a post on another site and a person got the CS 3 upgrade at Walmart on-line for $148.82! It appears to be the boxed version. I got on Walmart sites and it is there. NOW that t's me off. (there is a postage charge)

Hi David ...

I have my eye on the MacPro Two GHz Quad-Core ... Oh it is beautiful !!. Ummm it makes the price of CS3 look like a drop in the Ocean. :o :o

I think it may have to wait until later in the year :)

I just installed an upgrade of CS3 Design Standard this morning. Make sure that you check out all of the info at Adobe about removing the Beta version before you install. There are several threads and direct info from Adobe, as some are having issues. I was upgrading from an Educational version and in the end I had to call customer service to get an unlock code.

I also checked out the Walmart site and the version they are selling appears to only be the upgrade for CS2 and they are calling it 10. The box looks completely different than anything on the Adobe website. I assume that it has none of the other applications that you get with the suites, thus the difference in price. But I am not sure I understand why that version is even available, as I thought the goal was to only release the suites. Who knows......?

Regarding opening Jpeg files in RAW.....on another website, users were talking about how excited they were to be able to use the Vibrancy controls from ACR on their Jpeg files. The files are not converted to RAW as they have already been compressed and the extra data is gone. I haven't had time to try this aspect yet, but it sounds interesting.
