I just bought an EHD and it just occurred to me that if I move all my pics and digital scrapbook stuff to it that my organizer won't be able to locate it. How do I go about moving my files so that Organizer will still be able to find them?

Hi Amy-

You need to move from within the Organizer, and then you'll have no problem.

When I went to move my files it said that there was no CD/DVD avail. It didn't look for the EHD and I couldn't browse for it. So, I just did a full backup. Once that backup is complete can I just delete those files from my C drive since they are on my EHD? Will they still be connected in my Organizer or will I need to import them all again?

Amy-

I am NOT an expert, so I hesitate to give advice on this. I would recommend checking out this thread at Adobe on backing up and restoring:

Amy,

Open Photoshop, and go to the file where you have your pictures stored, right click on the file, and then on send to. If you have tags on your pictures, it may ask you if you also want the tags attached. When you finish moving all your files, check you EHD and make sure that they are there before you delete them off of your hard drive. I would also burn them to a DVD just as a backup.

VERY VERY good advice!

Whoa there, Amy  What about a BACKUP?

Your EHD is only a mechanical device and one day it WILL fail - that's a promise :(

Do tell us you really don't mean to delete them from your C: drive once you have transferred them.

The problem is that my C drive is COMPLETELY full! So, I do have them on CD but I'm going to get a 2nd EHD to continually back up to as well. What would be your advice if you don't think I should take them off my C drive.

Also, JoDee - when you told me to go to the file where my picture are and right click and send to - were you talking about in the organizer? I have Elements 3 and maybe that's the problem, but when I right click on the file folder there's no "send to" option.

Amy,

I’m sorry I didn’t make myself clear, and messed up on some of the terminology on moving your photos to the external hard drive. All you have to do is click on the picture in your organizer, then go to file>move. You can move multiple photos at one time by clicking on one picture, and shift clicking on the last one that you want to move, but I’m in the habit of not moving too many at one time, (guess I’m afraid or something) LOL. Let me know if you need more help.

Hi Amy

Ah, your C: drive is full :) This is what I would do - it's how my system is configured.

I have two drives in my PC - C: and D: C: just has Windows XP and other techie stuff needed to run the PC whilst D: has my editing programs and layouts etc on it. In other words C: is my operating system drive and D: is my working drive. On top of all of that I have an EHD which I use for backups.

Why not get another big internal drive instead of another EHD and copy all your layouts, embellishments, kits etc to it and then use this as your working disk? Leave Windows XP and Elements where they are on your C: drive as there is no point in reinstalling them.

Here, in the UK, EHDs cost three or four times more than an ordinary internal hard disk and they are not quite as fast.

Just my two cents or pennies worth :)
