I work during the day and take class part time at night. Finals are this week. As a student I was able to get a student licenses/copy of CS3 nearly nothing. We had a software settlement that paid for most of it and I had some extra money from Jury Duty which took care of the rest of it with a little to spare so I ordered it and it came on Saturday. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do anything with it until after my last final on Thursday evening.

Going from Elements to CS is a big jump. I'm not even sure where to start. I welcome advise from the Photoshop pros. At least I got wise and started to save off the photoshop tutorials from here each month as well as the elements ones, even though I thought I'd never be able to afford to get photoshop. At the time the offer was made to go to CS2, I couldn't afford the two hundred to do it. The student license is limited but meets my needs for now. The student copy was more than the CS2 offer but cheaper than a double upgrade to get to CS3. I'll have to learn as much as I can before classes start again in the fall.

I made the same jump a year and a half ago. If you like learning, it will go fine for you. I didn't have any problems. It was alittle strange at first, but I've never looked back and have learned and learned...and continue to learn. I bought a few books and did tuts (free ones) in order to learn. There are tons of free tuts on the internet. A must view is Photoshop Killer Tips and Photoshop TV. I have learned a ton from it. Both are free, but Photoshop TV, is now only free for the current version, so you need to remember to view it weekly, or if you don't have time that week, save it and view it later. Good luck.

Lynn, how long did it take for you to get CS3 after you ordered it? I ordered mine last week and no sign of it yet. I really liked the beta version so when they took that away I decided I had to buy the upgrade. I am sure you will love it when you learn where everything is on it.

I ordered it Sunday night and it came Saturday, so about 7 days.

I can view all the old Photoshop TVs because I joined NAPP (also at a student rate) when I attended the CS2 workshop in March. After attending that, I knew I had to find a way to upgrade. Also for signing up at the show for NAPP, I got two free educational DVDs (one on channels and one on actions) which are probably not good to start with. Once I'm comfortable with the basics, they should be really good. I looked at some of the NAPP tutorials but it was hard to do the ones I wanted with elements which didn't have all the functions. So now my NAPP membership is more worth while since I'll be able to follow along. As a Member of NAPP they also send an educational magazine which has some projects I'd like to try. I got two free issues at the show and my first through the mail so I'm already way behind.

There are so many new things and so many places to get info I don't really know where to start. I think after my finals are done I'll either try to find a book or start with the photoshop TVs. One down, one more final to go.

would you ladies recommend going right into photoshop, as I am learning
pse5, am I wasting my time with the lower version

what type of student do you need to be for a discount?

Digi---my personal recommendation is to master Elements5---then move to CS when you have. The learning curve is so steep, that digging into Elements, and then carrying forward your "knowledge base" to CS can be a whole lot easier. The Adobe people have given us SO MUCH in Elements! Take it to mastery there first!--and do it with LINDA's training CD's to get you scrapping HIGH QUALITY pages from the gitgo while you learn the tools. My recommendation to you is to zero in on the KEYSTROKES as you begin (because they are the same in Photoshop) and if you take the time to do that, you can transition with ease.

thank you Priss - I did buy Linda's PSE 5 CD and it is wonderful
I am the only caretaker for my Dad, this has me doing a lot of work and not getting into the gallery enough, it was fun to follow along as much as possible with the albums.
I see so much of both programs around, I don't want to miss out, I also have previous CD's of Linda's : )
It makes me comfortable to know it will be similar to move up...this is so addicting...my eyes are bigger than my memory LOL!

The discount requirements are on the Adobe website. When I ordered the software I had to enter some information for student enrollment verification. The adobe site lists sites to buy student software if it is not available at the campus bookstore. The website I ordered from lists schools it has agreements with and can do the verification on-line. Otherwise you have to mail or fax in proof of enrollment.

Not all the keystokes are the same. I'm use to using cntl+z, not only with elements but lots of other software as well as a backout. With CS3 it is alt+ctrl+z which was driving me nuts. I had to pause the video a lot to find things. A lot doesn't seem to work like in elements. After I saved my brushes, it wouldn't let me delete some of the old ones. However I did manage to make some lace. I decided to jump in with this months video as my starting point. I'd love it if there was a E4 to CS3 getting started tutorial somewhere out there. It also appears that the paint bucket is gone. I used to use that a lot but now I have the do the fill shortcuts. Anyway here was my first CS3 project.

Lynn, I just got CS3 installed and you'll be happy to hear that the paint bucket is still there, it is just hiding in the flyout menu of the gradient tool. I had a hard time finding it too but the help menu said it was there so I hunted around. It does make it harder to do the tutorials when you don't know where the tools are. At least I am blaming it on that.
