View Full Version : Question before I start tagging

I have just loaded Elements 5.0 and I have created a list for my tags, collections and catagories. Now I am ready to start importing and start organizing. But first a question.
I have many, many kits, freebies, etc that I have accumulated. These are organized on my hard drive by store, designer and kit. When I start importing all these files into Elements for the first time, do I have to import them all at once or can I do just a folder at a time? Or is it better to just do them all and tag what I can when I can?
Any comments or advise before taking the plunge will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would definitly only import a folder at a time, then tag those, then go on to the next one. Otherwise it will get overwhelming. After you import a folder and tag your stuff, do a File->Catalog->Recover. Then go onto the next folder.
And welcome to Scrappers Guide!

Thanks Trish! I am glad I can do this a folder at a time. It's going to be a daunting task but I am determined to get it done. I am learning a lot going through all the different posts. I'm glad I found this site. This is great!

Trish, why do you do a File-Catalog-Recover process? I've been importing one folder at a time and tagging each kit, but never though to do the file-catalog-recover, so I'm curious. \
Thanks.

The File->Catalog->Recover compacts and cleans up the database. Some people have reported seeing the database grow unreasonably, even just editing one picture and saving to a version set. This also usually keeps version sets and stacks working (there have been problems).
It's basic maintenance that you should do regularly, just like backing up.

With Version 5 I have an intermittent problem that causes a disconnect between the organizer and the editor. When this happens I cannot select an image and open either edit mode. Also, if I am editing an image and save it to the organizer I get an error message saying that someone else is using the catalog or there is a disk error.
The only solution that works to reconnect the two is the recover you mentioned here. It takes a while to do the routine and usually stalls somewhat at 33% and 66% done. As a matter of fact at the 66% mark, the computer states that the program is not responding. DO NOT PANIC!;) it will resume and finish if you leave the room and come back later.

I don't know if I should say this but in all honesty I would ditch the PSE Organizer. I love the PSE editor but not the organizer. ACDSee9 Photomanager is a lot faster and more flexible. PSE Organizer has some nice features for making projects I guess but to me it's really cumbersome for organizing photos and digi supplies.

Is it difficult to bring the pictures from this photomanager into the editor?

Meems...many folks (on this forum) are with you in your opinion of the Organizer with PSE. I, on the other hand, love it. But I've never tried ACDSee9Photomanager. Since I'm happy with what I have, don't think I will experiment. Some days I just don't want to have to climb another learning curve despite the praises sung of it! :) Aren't we all glad there are options!

When I was using PSE 4 I couldn't get the organizer to work. It was so so so so slow. I've upgraded to PSE 6 and I LOVE the organizer! It's so quick and so much easier than looking at small thumbnails in my pictures file. But I do shut down all programs running in the background before I use PSE. Something I didn't know how to do when I was using 4.

I feel the same way right now. I just went trough a hugh learning curve with missing files. My brain can only absorb so much.Elements 6 is new to me only 2months (in the third) and it is alot to learn.
