I am using PSE5, Windows XP. I am not able to send any photos from Organizer to Editor that I had in the Organizer before I upgraded from PSE3. Ones I have scanned, added from camera or pages made since I began using PSE5 will open in Editor. I ended up opening the photos I needed today through Explore to Editor and then saved a new document.

Any idea why I can't get them to open in Editor?

Have you tried a File->Catalog->Recover in the organizer?

I looked at that but wondered if that would lose the recent work I have done. I have most everything backed up but not sure ALL is. I don't do a backup in PSE because it takes oodles of CDs - I have about 12,000 photos.

So, question is, if I do a recovery do I still have everything that I have now?

I thought at first if I did a 'recovery' that meant I would 'restore' from a backup. Then I realized that 'recovery' seemed to reconnect somehow, and I really needed to do something to put the catalog to rights.

In version 5 I sometimes find I cannot open in editor from organizer or save in editor to the organizer. Then I just shut everything down, including the computer, and reboot followed by 'recovery.' It works!:D

Dottie,
You might want to consider backing up your images on DVDs then. It will take far fewer DVDs than CDs. Either that or invest in an external hard drive.

I've had two members write to me this week to tell me that their hard drives crashed and they lost all their Premier downloads.

We just can't say it enough. Back up your work. Your images, your page layouts, your Premier issues and all your downloads. Losing everything is devastating. Don't take that chance.

Dottie,

A Recover is different - it just does database cleanup. Try it, it won't hurt anything. It can look like it is hanging at 33% or 66%, but just leave it for a while (even over night), and it will finish.

I just did a Recovery which was successful. However, older photos (PSE3) will not go to Editor. I did buy an external hard drive today and will install it and back up everything to it.

Question on the external hard drive: do I "move" photos from the Organizer to the hard drive? Then are they also removed from My Pictures on my hard drive?

Since I have most everything already on CDs, perhaps I could just delete them from PSE5 completely. I really only need the things I am currently working on in the Organizer. Can't I always "Get" them from the CDs if I need them in the future?

Which brings to mind - I could Get Photos from My Pictures that won't load into Editor. I haven't done that as I thought I then might have duplicates - at least duplicate thumbnails. Then it gets confusing.

I really appreciate everyone's help on this.

Dottie,

It depends - are you going to use the External Hard Drive for backing up, or for storing your photos? If you are going to use them for storing, then use the Move command in the Organizer, this will move them from where ever they are stored (your My Pictures directory?) to where ever you tell them on the external hard drive.

Yes, you could "get" them from CD's in the future, but you would lose your tagging information if you remove them from the organizer.
