I'm a premier subscriber and in previous Premier Editions, Linda included Metal layer styles and Charm layer styles. When I received them (probably over a year ago or longer), I installed them in PSE 4. Now I also have PSE 5 in a different computer and have installed them with the same directions she gives in the Premier issues, but when I open PSE 5 and look in layers styles, they are not there. I did close pse and even turned off the computer after installing them, but they are still not in layer styles. I deleted the file and repeated the installation again, and still doesn't work. How do I install them in PSE5?

To install layer styles, close Elements. Navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\Special Effects\Layer Styles directory. You can't just put the .asl file into the folder, because if you do, they'll show up in the Bevel library. So make a new folder for them and put them in the new folder. When you open Elements the cache will rebuild, and your new styles will be available for use.

Are you using Vista?

Installing Layer Styles and other content on Windows Vista differs from installation on Windows XP. Navigate to the C:\ProgramData > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 5.0 > Photo Creations > special effects > layer styles folder. Copy the styles into this folder, and remember to make sure they are in their own folder or they will just appear with the bevels as above

Reopen Elements and you will see a message the artwork and effect caches are being built. Once this has finished, your new shapes will be available in the Artwork and Effects palette under Special Effects > Layer Styles.

Now that we've finally figured this one out--wonder how this is going to change when Version 6 is issued (pretty soon).

Thanks Priss, but my Adobe PSE files do not appear in Documents and Settings, but in Program Files>Adobe>Photoshop Elements 5.0>. In the Presets file there are folders for patterns, gradients, texture, etc. The Preset file has a "Styles" folder. In the styles folder are the bevels, drop shadows, photographic effects, patterns, etc. That is were a placed Linda's layer styles, but they don't show when I open PSE5. There is no Photo Creations or Special Effects file. I got PSE5 when it first came out. Maybe I have an earlier version, and that is why it's different to yours.

Hi Sonita ...

It is the same version ... and you do need to install them in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\Special Effects\Layer Styles ..

.. but in order to see those files first you need to make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Window :)

This is my first post here but I have the same issue as Sonita. I use PSE 5.0 along with XP.

I have been trying to follow these instructions by Priss.

MY problem is where do I find the Photo Creations folder and if it is hidden how do I find it? I have the option to show hidden files turned on.

Thanks for answering my questions.

Hi Tamara,
You first have to make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Windows.

Before you get started. Close out of Photoshop Elements 5.0

Next, click on Start > C drive > Tools > Folder Options > View
Then go down the list and click the round circle beside "Show hidden files and folders"
Then click OK.

Then you can follow Priss's instructions...

Also, you may have to press and hold the shift key until the artwork and effects pallet is completely rebuilt the next time you start PSE in order for them to show up.
