I have a black and white photo from 1941. One side of the picture is washed out. The other side is fine. How do you go about correcting the washed out side? I appreciate any help you can provide.

I have PSE 5.

Try selecting the washed out side (perhaps with a feather), and then duplicating it (ctrl-j), and then change the mode (at the top of the layers pallet) to Multiply. If it's not dark enough, do it again (repeat as necessary). If your last layer is too dark, reduce the opacity until it matches.

Thanks Trish. I have used that before. I just could not think of what it was.
