View Full Version : Question -- view PSD files?

I am using Windows XP. When I view the thumbnails in my file folders, I cannot view PSD's ... they only show as a PSD icon. I know that at sometime in the past I was able to view the PSD files, but I don't know how I did this. Is it a download file ... or something that I need to set? I hope that someone can help me solve this problem. Thanks!

PSD stands for Photoshop Document, is it possible that you were looking at these files in Photoshop/elements?

No -- when I changed the view to thumbnails, it used to show PSDs, as well as JPGs. I would like to avoid opening each PSD in photoshop just to see what is in the file. I have templates in a folder, and am trying to quickly choose which one that I wish to use. Hope that makes sense ...

There's a huge discussion (and about a million people really angry about this) on the Adobe boards. There are some third party registry tweaks that allow the thumbnail to build, but I rarely trust third party directions, and just don't do them. You'll be fine if you work in Bridge, Lightroom or Organizer in viewing these psd files, but if you want to tweak your computer to make it build viewable thumbnails from your psd files, you might want to explore the Adobe forums for information about it. There are ways to do it, and I, too, would love to know if anyone has had success with this. I consider it a FLAW and quite a nuisance not to be able to see the image in explorer

Here's the thread--http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc8f170/3

Thanks for this info. I will check out the adobeforums. I'd really like to find an easy solution ... if I do, I'll share it here.

Hi Priss,

I understand your reluctance to use third party sources. Having said that I did it with Thumbview Lite. It's freeware and I got it through download.com where I feel reasonably comfortable getting stuff because they review it and check it for evil things. If you check out their review you'll see that they like it--I like it too. I've been using it for several months with no problem. I just installed it on my new computer too since I couldn't see psd or png files without it.

Just thought you might like to know about it...

I've downloaded it but how do you use it to see the psd files?

Go into explore and then navigate into the folder you want. Then make sure your views button is set to view Thumbnails. Then the pictures should appear for your PSD files.

I did that but I still see the PSD icon. I wonder if i have to reboot after downloading Thumbnail lite

Maybe you do, and after you downloaded, when it asked if you want it in your Start menu did you say yes. If not, you may have to activate it once your computer starts up.

I don't know if this helps anyone or not, but I started with elements 4.0 and then when 5.0 came out I upgraded. It said I could keep 4.0 on my computer with 5.0, I just couldn't have them open at the same time. So I did that... It was awesome, I could see the thumbnails of ALL my psd files next to my jpeg files. Then I decided it was taking up too much memory to keep both programs on so I un-installed 4.0. After that I was no longer able to see the thumbnails in my windows.
Needless to say, I installed 4.0 back on.. and magically, I see them.

Weird?

Hi ..

Between versions of Elements Adobe removed a file (the one that lets you see the thumbnails of psd files) the reason being that the file could cause problems. If you have an older version still installed Elements "sees" the file in the older version and the psd thumbs appear :)

Is it wierd that I could not view the psd files in 4.0 alone? I have to have both versions installed to see them?

I downloaded the thumbview lite right after this thread started, and it worked great. The problem was that after I turned the computer off, when I turned it on the next day it froze the first page I went to. I tried again turning off and on the computer, but it keeps freezing. So I had to remove it. It is a shame, I loved seeing the thumbnail of the psd's when I first installed. Doesn't anyone know how to resolve this problem?
