I bought some border templates...they are on individual layers...I tried placing one (using the paper I had selected)...merged the layers and dragged it to my layout and created a clipping mask...then...I started to add the stitching border...when I do that say I'm placing it right above the border moves too..Basically it gets smaller...that tells me it's taking up space of that border...what am I doing wrong???

Sorry Terri, I haven't a clue. What happens if you put the stitching layer somewhere else first, and then drag it over your border? I've never used border templates....

Couple of questions?

Have you then ctrl+e to bring your clipping mask together and form the single layer of the templateborder shape and the paper, and THEN dragged your stitching to layer above. Perhaps what's happening here is that the stitching is trying to clip to the other layer, and the program isn't seeing it as a layer.

Also, if you're seeing a big change in size of the templateborder to the layout are, double check that the resolution of the template matches the resolution of your working layout.

Hope it is one of these two things, but do get back to us if it isn't.
