View Full Version : brushes on the desktop
I heard that you can add brushes on your desk top and use them from there. How do you use brushes in Photoshop elements 4.0 and 6.0 and add color from the desktop. This is suppose to keep your program from slowing down. Hope someone can help?

Yes. When you choose the brush tool, and then click on the brush drop-down, to the right you will see a circle in a triangle. Click on that and choose "Load brushes" (or Load brush set or something to that effect). Another window will pop-up to allow you to navigate to your brush sets. I always keep mine in a folder in My Documents\brushes.

Trish,
Is there a program that would let you view abr's (brushes) before installing or loading?

I've not heard of an abr viewer, but wouldn't that be just too neat? If you're purchasing brushes, the artist/designer usually does a preview page, though that shows them all, and then you can imagine how they would twist, turn, and expand or contract when you have command of them in the brushes' "more" options.

Hi Priss,
A free brush viewer that I have been using for a while is available here (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=143912). It has also been mentioned by others on the PET forum. It works pretty well. After I read your post, I downloaded version 2.0 - I was using an older version. (There is a version 2.2 but I had trouble with the download.)

There's one at sourceforge: http://abrviewer.sourceforge.net

I have used an abr viewer, I believe it is the one from sourceforge, but it would not allow you to view calligraphy brushes. So it was not very successful for me because a lot of my brushes are for the swirl/twirls (or what ever they are called).
Jancy if you find one that you like, please let us know.

Jo Dee I did read on the site that it does not view Calligraphy brushes so I have been hunting around to see if there is one that does with no luck. The only one I have come across is the one mentioned above.
Seems odd that you can't view calligraphy brushes but you are correct. :(
I'll post back if by chance there is one around.

What I tend to do is load the brushes temporarily and make a page of them and save them as a jpeg with the same file name so they show up side by side and I can see at a glance what is there.

I've been using ABR viewer for a very long time. I attempted to upload the June version, but also had trouble with it. Downloaded it a from two different locations, but neither worked.
I would not recommend saving your brushes/fonts or anything like that to your desktop. I have a separate folder called brushes, one called fonts, one called actions, once called styles, gradients, shapes, etc.

I saw another viewer posted on the PET user forum today. It is from Easyelements. I downloaded it and it looks pretty good - also shows calligraphy brushes.

The abrview (http://www.easyelements.com/abrview.html) is pretty neat and there is a video tutorial on how to use. It is free.

ACDSee 10 will be adding an ABR viewer very soon.
