Is there much difference btween ACDsee and Picasa for organizing?

I'm not familiar with Picasa, but I LOVE my ACDSee! I just upgraded to the newest version of the PHoto Manager (10) and LOVE it! It is easy and quick to learn, very intuitive - you can drag-and-drop files into your categories for easy tagging/organizing, set up as many categories and sub-categories as you want. I have main categories of photos, digi-scrap supplies, and my digi-scrap designing toolbox. You can even import someone else's categories (and then edit them to your liking as well) so that you can get right to tagging! ('tagging' is how you organize your files - kind of like assigning key-words).
Hope that helps! :)

I'm not familiar with Picasa but love ACDSee and and like Jill D I upgraded to Version 10. You can unzip files inside the program, it would play several different video formats, has little pop up windows for a closer view. You can also use it to view and catalog fonts and have them available in your program (I use it in PSE5) without actually installing them. If you have a friend you might want to check out the Holiday deals at ACDsee...almost a two for one deal.

I just downloaded the trial version of ACD but also use PSE 5. My problem is that PSE 5 has slowed down considerably, sometimes it almost freezes on me even though I keep all my photos in a completely different folder on another drive.
Does anyone know why PSE slows down?
Please help, PSE is driving me crazy. I looked at Picasa and it's too simple, because I like the idea of vignettes and being able to fade the photo from the edges instead of the entire photo. It's very easy in ACD.
Thank you for any comments.
Sabina.

Sabina,
Have you done a File->Catalog->Recover? It usually cleans up and compresses the database, making it work faster.

Thank you, Trish. Just saw your posting on my query and will have to find out what you mean. I have no idea what a file-catalogue-recover is, pls. don't laugh. I will have a look in the help section. I hope it will not refer to photos that I might have in PSE 5, because I don't have one single one. But there must be a problem because tonight it was stuck. I could not work in PSE, no matter what I tried. I then closed it, then re-opened with another file and it started working again.
I will have a look tomorrow morning how to find this file recover thingy.
Thank you so much for helping.
Sabina.

Sabina,
I was assuming you were using the Organizer (since ACDSee is an organizer). If you're not, then you don't need to do a File->Catalog->Recover.
If the Editor is slowing down... There can be things that do effect its speed. If you have too many plug-ins, fonts, actions, etc, it can slow it down. If you didn't disable your antivirus program when you installed, that can cause weird problems. (If that's the case, disable your antivirus, uninstall PSE, reboot, disable your antivirus, and reinstall.) It is also possible that your preference file has become corrupted. If you think that is the case, go to: C:\Documents and Settings\[your windows login]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Editor and delete the "Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.psp" file and start PSE again.

Hi Trish,
and thank you so much for your reply. I am going to try it right now and see if it helps. You might have a point about having too many plug-ins, because all this seems to be happening since I bought Akvis Chameleon and Old Paper and Paper Curl from Av Bros. Maybe that's it. Would you have any idea what the limit is on important plug-ins and other stuff into PSE?
Thank you for your continuous support.
Sabina.

There isn't really a limit. The hard thing with PSE is that you can't just "load" things as need, except for brushes, patterns, gradients and color swatches. (That is an advantage of Photoshop.) So, any of those extras I keep in my own folders. For plugins, I believe there is an option to specify another directory that's not in the elements path and I think that can improve things.

Trish, I am going through all my folders within the PSE folder and taking my own back out into a folder I created separately. The plugin from Advis has to stay, but once I have organized and removed my own props and shapes and graphics, it might work better.
I will let you know. Teaches me a lesson not to be over eager with PSE. I had visions of being able to access my own but maybe it's not a good idea.
Thank you for your help.

Hi there,
you have to import the new fonts into your font folder on windows and everything should be fine. I just imported a whole batch of fonts from CK and some others and I had no problem with it. As far as the organizer in PSE goes, I absolutely prefer to have my photos in my own folders and organized MY way. It drives me silly with PSE that the program keeps wanting to import my photos. ACD does not do this. I have both programs now and find ACD easier in some functions, but PSE is still the better program though I get the feeling I shall never stop learning.
Try and get the following book at the library: Scott Kelby: PSE5 (or 6) for Digital Photography. It is written for beginners like me and very simple to understand. Also I joined as a Premier Member the Scrappersguide and Linda Sattgast is amazing with her tutorials. Also as a member you receive many layouts free. FREE. And they are designed by top designers.
Hope this helps a little.

Maggie,
don't despair. You will receive a lot of help here.
The important thing is to IMPORT any new fonts into your font folder in windows.
I wished someone here could advise us on using ACD. I still have 12 days left on my trial download but not sure if I should actually buy it. The more I learn the better I see that PSE is amazing. Read the book by Scott Kelby, it gives you ideas and help in very simple language and fantastic shortcuts. Like enlarging your actual canvas, or changing the color of your background, or having an object appear as if you have a spotlight on it. Absolutely amazing.
However, I have not studied ACD enough and cannot judge.
Maybe someone here can give us some help and point out the difference. Personally I have a feeling that PSE is superior and recognized as such everywhere. You get fantastic support by Linda S. and everyone else in Scrappers Guide, whilst ACD seems like a runner up.
Sabina (still learning and very new in all this).

Hi Connie,
thank you for your email, but I just wondered about the actual software. I am not using it, I just downloaded the trial version but decided it was not worth it compared to Photoshop Elements. I am using PSE 5 and some other editing programs like MS Digital Imaging, but mostly PSE.
And I am learning and learning.
Take care. And thank you for your reply.

Could you pls. tell me if I can use ACDSee for organizing my fonts?
I am getting too many fonts for me to look through and really would like to make things easier.
If someone could advise me please? I don't want to use PSE 5, it's getting on my nerves with its organizer already. I want a separate program without PSE 5, which is a wonderful software and I am learning like crazy etc. etc., but for all those crazy fonts that are in win xp (included) I need a font manager so that I can exclude most of them.
Please help......somebody, anybody, hehe.

thank you, Trish, I am going to look at some tonight. Tried to download one but my pc crashed because I accidentally downloaded the MAC version. Imagine! that's what happens when you are frazzled and want to achieve everything at once.

Hi again,
I installed an organizing thingy in my ACDSee, but found an even better one.
http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/dsiwiki/OrganizingStyles. I had Sarah, but like the Liz organizer better for my needs.
Now is it ok if I import the second one ? I can't find the previous one in any of the files of ACDSee because I wanted to delete it.
Take a look at those organizers. They seem amazing.
Sabina.
