View Full Version : Searching for items in multiple file folders in PSE 6

I organize my scrapbooking elements into multiple folders such as backgrounds, tags, fasteners, etc. When I get a new kit, I tag all the items in the kit with the kit name, then move the backgrounds into the background folder, tags into tags folder, etc. In PSE 3.0, when I did a search on the kit name, it would show me all the kit items from all my folders at once.
I recently upgraded from PSE 3.0 to PSE 6.0. Now when I search on a kit name, it only shows me the items from that kit in one folder, eg. the tags from that kit. To see other items from that kit, such as backgrounds, I have to highlight the background folder individually.
Is there a way I can view the results of a search from all folders at once so that I can see all the elements from a particular kit all at the same time?
Thanks in advance
Becky

Becky,
Are you in folder view? I don't use the Organizer, so I'm not sure... Give me a few minutes to start it up.

Okay, I don't use quite the same set up as you (I put kits in folders, and then tag with background, charms, ribbons), but if I click on my "Backgrounds" tag, I see all the backgrounds, organized by folder. I'm in folder view.

I'm not sure what you mean by folder view

Up in the upper right (very top) of the screen is a menu that says "Display" - you can choose "Folder Location", "Import Batch" or "Thumnail". Try changing those and see what happens to your results.

Thanks - When I chose Import Batch or Thumbnail I was able to see all parts of my kit. But Folder Location only shows results one folder at a time. It sounds like when you use Folder Location you are able to see all searched items at once - is it supposed to be this way? If so, can you suggest anything I can do to make mine do it.
You are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. People like you are an invaluable asset to the digital scrapbooking community.
Again, many thanks

Becky,
Yeah, I think it should work. If I do a search with mine, it will show all the items with that tag, broken down by folder.
My first thought: Go to File->Catalog, choose your catalog in the list at the bottom, then on the right, choose "Repair" and then "Optimize."
If that doesn't work, then perhaps the preferences for the Organizer are corrupt. Exit the organizer, then go to this path (you will need to show hidden files in Windows Explorer to see it):
C:\Documents and Settings\[your windows login]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\
And rename the "Organizer" folder to "Organizer.old" and then restart the Organizer. (That's if you are using Windows XP. If you are using Vista, I'm not sure what the path will be.)

Thanks, Trish
I'll try these things. No time right now, but I'll let you know how it works when I'm done.

IT WORKS!!!!
I tried repairing and optimizing the catalog, but that didn't help.
However, I also fixed the corrupt preferences as you instructed and it did the trick. You are a genious!
Thanks

Becky,
I'm so glad that helped. I wasn't sure.
