Trish (and/or others) -
I've read a couple of posts where you recommend doing a "recover" every so often as a part of maintenance. I seem to have constant trouble with my Organizer, many of the problems others describe. I am wondering when I do recover do I want to select the "Reindex Visual Similarity Data" box?
Are there any drawbacks to doing a "recover"?
Thanks

Stacy,
Absolutely NO drawbacks to doing a recover. It simply cleans up and compresses the database file. If you have never done it, or haven't done it in a while, it can look like it is "hung" at 33% or 66%, but it's not - just let it run for while (or overnight :) ).
I don't know how the "Reindex Visual Similarity Data" stuff effects anything. Maybe after you move all your files, do it with that checked.

Thanks Trish -
I hadn't searched enough in my books before posting. I just read in Debra Debowski's book that she does not check the "Reindex Visual Similarity Data" box because she says that if you "normally drag items to the Find Bar to find matching images you will want to check this box". Since I don't know what this means I will not check the box.
So here goes the "recovery".

I have never heard of this, can you give the rest of us some more info?

As I don't use the organizer (I just keep up on it through the adobe forums), I'm not 100% sure... But, there are several ways to do searching or "finds" in Organizer. You can search on metadata (camera name, lens, focal length, etc.), or you can have it try to find visually similar pictures, and I'm guessing that's what this is for.

Trish -
As a followup, your message got me thinking. I did a search by metadata by camera and it worked. I posted what I did and the results on the following forum where a similar question came up.

Thanks for getting my thinking cap going further!
It worked.

Jodys -
Unfortunately, what I wrote that I read in Debra Debowski's book is all I know. I hope to do some research on it because I would like to understand what it means. Sorry I'm not more helpful.

Ok, I found some information that explains what the "Reindex Visual Similarity Data" box is about. See the attached articles.
When researching I found these answers to the question, but better are the links to the articles below.
"Reindex visual search data" Should I check that?
Doesn't matter - it will take longer. This is to set up the "similar pictures" search." by Collin Walls from the Adobe Forum, see 2nd article below.

I'm personally still a bit unclear if I and/or when I would want to check it. I suppose if I want to "update" my organizer to find similar photos I would, but I think as a rule I'd not check it.
I hope this helps.

Is the repair option the same as recovery?? I don't see a recovery option-only a repair

They changed names in the later versions. I think in PSE 6, it is 2 steps, File->Catalog->Repair, and then File->Catalog->Optimize.
In PSE 5, it is just File->Catalog->Recover.
I think they changed the names because some people thought "Recover" meant "Recover from backup. (Usually it is "backup" and "restore.")
