Hi
I have been scanning my old negatives in Canon Canoscan 8800F, editing them in Photoshop Elements 5, then saving them with Photoshop Elements 5 with the Image Options in the JPEG Options dialog set to 12 Maximum.

However, I have read that saving at this setting increases the file size and that the setting should be 10 - still on Maximum. I have tried this and it cuts the file size byapproximately two thirds and I can't see any degradation in zooming in on the image. Is there any reason for not saving at this amount of compression?

Hope someone can advise me

Regards

I think saving at 10 is fine. However, if you think you might edit again, you'll want to save as PSD, as every time you re-save a jpeg, you compress some more, and you can introduce artifacts.

Thanks for your reply Troush. I did know about saving as PSD for re-editing but doubtful about saving at 10. I take it you save all your images at 10?

Yes. The size difference is huge between 10 and 12. But, I NEVER save over an original...
