resizing photo

I was using Elements 5 and just purchased Elements 7. Before I could drag my photo onto a smaller mat and it would change the picuture to reflect new size and would not change the picture as long as I had the same resolution. Now 7 resizes photo to a small thumbnail. What am I doing wrong?

If you are dragging up from the project bin, PSE 7.0 creates a "Smart Object" frame.

Go to Window->Images->Tile.

Then use the move tool to drag the photo to your mat.

Can you turn it off?

You can't turn it off, unfortunately. Basically, it is a full resolution composite of the image, so you can zoom in more and such. I don't like them, as they are memory hogs.
