Okay, I had this figured out once before, but I had to reinstall my PE4 because a layer style set was corrupted and in the process I lost a custom brush set I had created (of course, I hadn't saved a backup copy, learned my lesson on that one!). I have my new brush set created, but if I am altering the settings of a preset brush and want to save it as a custom brush, when I get my brush set the way I want and save it, how do I get it to go into this new set instead of the preset one? It keeps corrupting my preset brush palette when I try to save it to the preset one, and that is not where I want it anyway. I read through the help section but it doesn't go into very much detail on saving brush sets or brushes into sets, and I can't remember how I did it last time. Thanks for the help!

I found the answer over at PET. Here's how to do it for anyone else who wants to know:
Define Brush from Image
Ctrl-A to select all
From the Menu, Edit > Define Brush from Selection
Name the brush
Choose the Paintbrush Tool and scroll to the end of the brushes palette where you will find your new brush. This brush is just temporary and will disappear when you exit Elements unless you save it.
Save Brush to a Set
Open the Preset Manager from the brush palette by clicking the small right-pointing arrow at the top right. Scroll to the end of the active brush set and select the brush you just defined. Then click Save Set and give your brush set a name
You’ll need to restart Elements for your new brush set to show up in the brushes palette.
Caution: If you should define more custom brushes and add them to this same brush set, when saving the set with the new brush, make sure to select all brushes (Ctrl-click each one) that you want to remain in the set before saving.
Thanks Diana @ PET forum!
