View Full Version : Need help with reinstall

Recently I had some problems with my old Mac but it's doing OK now. The OS was reinstalled. Now when I open Elements I get a message that it needs to be reinstalled since something is missing. Can't remember the exact words. I was able to do a card, save it and print. So that is working fine. However, when I go to iPhoto and click on a photo wanting to edit it in Elements, this does not work even though preferences are set this way. So I'm going to have to do the reinstall hoping it will correct the problem. I'm not planning on trashing my old version. I'll be installing the same version (4.0) as I've had for a while. Am I approaching this the right way? I don't want to lose all my styles, brushes, etc.
BTW, I have to stick with 4.0 because I don't have the required Intel processor for the latest version.
Hope someone has experience or can offer advice about this process. Thanks!

Hi Ruth ...
When you do a reinstall you will lose your brushes styles etc as it will install over your existing PSE4 ... so copy them all to a safe place before you start.
Have you tried trashing the prefs and repairing the Macs permissions ??

Wendy, I had not thought of repairing permissions and so I tried, but when I opened PSE I got this message "One or more files in the Adobe Application support folder necessary for running Photoshop Elements are missing. Please run the Photoshop Elements installer and re-install Photoshop Elements."
I also trashed the following file: com.adobe.photoshop.elements,plist (it's still in the trash).
There were other preference files, but I wasn't sure it was wise to delete them. For example: User/Library/Preferences/Adobe (also in the same path: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 Paths; Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 Settings; Adobe Save for Web 9.0 Prefs and Adobe UM) Hope you understand.
Your advice is very helpful! I'm think I need to go ahead and re-install after saving brushes, styles, etc. Do you agree?

Hi Ruth ...
Yes I would go ahead and do a reinstall ... it sounds like something has become pretty corrupt.
Do let me know how you go on with it :)

Wendy, the re-install was accomplished without any problems. No error messages opening PSE and I can edit with a click in iPhoto. Everything is working as it should. Thanks for holding my hand!
