Since fonts and building our font libraries is a ton of fun...let's get a thread rolling on where to find the free (and the commercial) fonts. There are a BUNCH of them out there to share.
A huge one--to start us off is Da Font.com (http://www.dafont.com)
Which font sites do you visit and like? And in your reply--how about telling us which font you find you use the most.
I use Liorah BT a lot, Douglas Hand, and a purchased one Ministry Script.

Priss, could you talk a little bit about what you use to organize your fonts, ie: The Font Thing, etc. I started using it, but I’m not very good at it (need to work on learning it better).

Hi, I'm a newbie from Australia, have been digital scrapping on and off for 2 years now and loving it, although I wish I had more time.
I joined a free fonts yahoo group, every few weeks they find and then send out a zipped file with lots fonts. Saves me doing all the work.
Here is the link if anyone is interested in joining.

Organize my fonts?
One way I do try to organize is cumbersome and clumsy--and while it took a lot of preparation, and lots of paper and big notebooks--I rarely use it.
That's to "print" the page
---on PC--RIGHT click the font and OPEN--print from there. Then that hard copy goes into a notebook and categorized under tabs by major headings like Handwriting, Script, good Journaling etc--and names like Bold and Blocky (for Freshman font, for example). This method is handy for when I'm combining fonts for word art or something like that --and rather useless otherwise;) I do TRY to NOTE THE SITE where I got that particular one, too when it's hard-copy filed!
On my computer they are filed in a main font folder, with sub folders for the same headings (so it relates to the printed example of the font) I have a font folder for each month--then at the end of the month, I move them all to the main folder and the proper sub-folder.
While I have a HUGE collection of them, my list of installed ones is probably about 300 --and having this many fonts is really unnecessary since I think we mostly fall back to fonts that came with the computer or several we use all the time anyway.
I've never created the habit of uninstalling a font when I'm through with it, though that might be a plan if you end up with a sluggish response when you are running through them, or trying to use them.
Remember don't try to install a font with the program open. Installation instructions are on all the font sites.
AND I'll bet there's a much more efficent way to do it--how do you manage them?

Do the zipped files work on Macs? I have downloaded several fonts and all that have come in a zipped file don't work for me. However, I don't really know what I am to do with the file once it is on my harddrive. Maybe that's where I am going wrong. :o

Scrapbook Answers magazine had a demo version of some software called Printer's Apprentice. It is great for fonts. You can even print a list of all your fonts. I don't remember which month's disk it was on, but a web search should locate the software. BTW this magazine offers some great digital freebies on its disk each month. It is an awesome magazine.
Check out www.fontgarden.com for some really nice ones, too, including a lot of handwriting fonts, which are great for journaling.

Givenout, the Font Thing is a font organizer that lets you install/uninstall fonts at will (it’s a free program, just have to download it).
It will really slow your computer down when you have too many fonts installed. The Font Thing lets you keep all the font files in folder(s), and download them only when you want, when your finished you just go and click the little icon to unload it.

Jo......I've downloaded the Font Thing and I love the way I can now see examples of the fonts.
My question is.........how does this work within Elements. How do you access a font if you haven't installed it in the Windows font file?
Thanks.

I think I've answered my own question with this excellent tutorial.
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/fontthing.shtml
So I take it that through this program you just install the font when you want to use it and then uninstall it........that would involve closing and reopening Elements though wouldn't it?

Robyn, glad you found the Font Thing, and got it working. Sorry that I didn’t get right back to you. I work during the day, and cook the evening meal, and have it on the table at 6:00, so my day is pretty full. I don’t usually get to the computer until 8 or 9 in the evening. Good thing that I don’t require much sleep, ‘cause I hate to leave the compooper and go to bed. The Font Thing is wonderful, now if I could just get my fonts organized into categories, that would really improve everything. LOL

wow there are so many font sites out there to choose from, I dont know if I could even narrow it down to even a couple. I've been collecting fonts for years, I probably have about 2k. I use Suitcase 9 to organize them. That way I can load only what I want. I organize them by category. It makes it a lot easier. The hard part is setting it up if you have a lot of fonts. But its super easy. Here's a couple of websites that I use.

I have a question about using fonts in work, scrapbooks or kits, to sell. I wouldn't use fonts that came with software, e.g. scrapbooking software.
What about the free downloads? Or are fonts for commerical use available?

Some fonts are available for commercial use and some are not. You need to read the TOU (Terms of Use). You can buy a commercial license for some. Every font designer has their own TOU. If you can't find a TOU, you can sometimes find an email for the designer when you open the font. It's best to be really specific about what you want to use the font for, as some are not familiar with digiscrapping at all. Most are very accommodating when they know what you want to use it for.

Go into a new document, no larger than 8x8, an enter the dingbat. Then choose Create brush from selection under the edit menu. It will place the brush at the bottom of whichever brush set you are in. Hope this helps.

Priss,
I have a question that maybe you can help me with. I went to a conference and one of the topics was on typography. They showed how with Open Type fonts (Adobe Pro fonts) you could get some really interesting swashes and things.
So I bit the bullet and purchased some Adobe Pro fonts - but I can't seem to get the Open Type styles (there is a flyout menu on the Character pallet) to work?
Do you know anything about this topic?

I have only a couple of Open Type Fonts, mostly work with True Type. My understanding is that they are inserted (copied and pasted) into the font's folder just like the TT's are, and that they then appear in the list of available fonts. My biggest problem is that I don't know how Mac computers handle this, (I do know that downloads for Macs are completely different than for PC's) So the only place I can steer you would be to recommend that you contact the Adobe Pro people if you can.

Here's one of my favorite sites to download free fonts. And one of the reasons it's my favorite is because the owner is a scrapbooker!! So you can look in various theme folders for the type of font that would be most appropriate for your layout. Examples are: birthdays and parties, Celtic, elegant and special occasions, handwriting fonts, etc. They even have CK Hall of Fame fonts for years 2001-2004. Check it out!! I think you'll be glad you did.

I forgot to mention that this site is owned by Angie Peterson, the author of "Book of Me," a scrapbooking book about scrapping about yourself. No affiliation by the way, just one happy owner of this book that has given me so much insight into myself.
Anyone else have a site to share??

This site has lots of free fonts and the samples are in the form of sayings and quotations that we can also use in scrapbooking. It gives me lots of ideas and inspiration for scrapbooking. It has free fonts for PC and Mac and dingbats too.

I hate to tell you this--really, because I LOVE this magazine and I am a subscriber--but November's issue is the LAST one. The publisher is no longer supporting this magazine and it will not continue unless another publisher picks it up. Anyone with a subscription will be getting refund for their remaining issues. I just received my November issue last week. It is a great magazine; it talks a lot about digital tips in addition to traditional scrapbooking, it gives very up-to-date-trends, and the CD each month is packed with free fonts.
All we can do it hope it gets picked up by another publisher, and look forward to Digital Scrapbooking Magazine, which is due to begin in January. Their website is up and you can sign up for a very low-priced introductory subscription.

Here's a question for everyone: How many fonts do you have?
3 days ago I decided to see just how many fonts I actually have on my computer. So I did a search for *.ttf. I have 2 internal 250 GB hard drives in my computer.
In my actual WINDOWS/Fonts folder I only have 236 fonts.
But the search turned up 4,156 additional fonts and that's after deleting the duplicate ones. These are fonts that I have downloaded and the ones that come with different installed programs. I couldn't believe it. I am in the middle of sorting them using The Font Thing. I will take me forever. LOL

Thanks for all the free font sites. Does anyone have a commercial ite (fonts sold for commercial use ) that they really like. I make some collages and vingettes of hockey players that I want to upload to my gallery site for sale and I want one or two good fonts to use for that purpose.
Also as an alternative to The Font Thing, I use extensis Suitcase which is another font organizer. It helps not to have them all installed on the hard drive and I can organize them into catagories to help me search for the right one. I think the Font Thing works simalarily.

I have used fonts from this site, and think you might want to add their newsletter and their product information to your font resources.
For this particular sale, theysay: "Most items, including fonts, are just $1 during our sale. And our new alphabets and Journaling Delights accents in PNG format are only $1.29. Save up to 66%!"

Also, when I try to install The Font Thing, I cannot install the version that includes the Setup.exe and install/uninstall utilities. The Setup.exe just doesn't run. I can download and run the version that just puts the zip out there, then I unzip, and create a shortcut to run it.

All the rest of my fonts (over 4,000) are on my other internal drive - D. I have a D:/Fonts folder and then I have about 10 or so other folders under that: Script, Hand Stamped, Hand Printed, All Capitals, Western etc.

Amy, any font from your font collection that you wish to use MUST be installed into the Windows Font Folder BEFORE you open the program, or it will not be available in your list of fonts in any program that includes a choice of fonts (publisher, word, print master, AND photoshop--they are shared files) In order not to junk up this folder with way too many of them--which would slow you down a bit, it is very easy to remove them if it's not a font you intend to use again soon. Just go into the fonts folder (where you put it in the first place) locate it, right click it and delete it.
note: Mac users--fonts behave differently on a macintosh computer.

I'm having a real chuckle reading this thread. I'm thinking of starting up a Fontaholics Anonymous group. I'm a recovering fontaholic. After drowning under the weight of 4320 fonts, even using a Font organizer, I realized I was only using about a dozen of them. In my frustration I decided to remove most of them from my hard drive, totally mucked up the programme files and had to reformat my hard drive! At least that cleaned out the fonts I never used and gave me a chance to start again - carefully this time ( not only with fonts but EVERYTHING!). I DO NOT recommend this way of removing fonts LOL! Now when I get tempted, I download the fonts on to a disc until I actually need to use them, and only then will I add it to my hard drive. Just a thought. ;)

I hope people read this far. I have something wierd happening. I've always saved my fonts to my windows/fonts directory. But I just realized that Elements and Word don't look there for fonts - they look in a directory called "control panel", subdirectory fonts. And now that I know that, and I go to download another font, I can't get at that control panel directory.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? (I'm able to manually copy/paste each one, but would really like to skip this step).
Thanks.

I love fonts! I searched for 'Beautiful', finally gave up and took a class in doing it by hand from one of the few calligraphers who still practice the art. Then a friend steered me to http://www.momscorner4kids.com/fonts/ and there it was! They have sooo many, and easy to download! lois z

You made me aware of something I didn't know. Can you download your fonts to a certain folder, unzip them, select all, copy and then paste into the Control Panel>Fonts folder. Still a step but faster than copy and pasting each one. I have all my downloaded fonts in a separate folder and then use The Font Thing to view, choose, and load into my program. It's a free program. This way the font drop down menu in my program is not so long and "The Font Thing" lets me have a closer view of the font than is provided in my program.

Thaks RDE and Judy--this discussion is really an important one. On a PC Fonts go into a shared windows file which then makes any installed font work in any program that has font choices (word, publisher, all the adobe softwares, some like Print Master--etc) These need to be downloaded, unzipped and then gotten into that master folder. COPY the unzipped font, (right click>ctrl+c) ---then go to Start>Control Panel>Fonts folder (sit on top of that, right click and then ctrl+v to paste--(install) the font there. Frequently weed out those fonts that YOU HAVE ADDED and don't use regularly (because having a lot of them in there REALLY slows down photoshop if the visual assist is turned on for the fonts in the library).
I know very little about installing fonts on a Mac, but if Wendy says that it is similar--and that fonts will work on both platforms--it is so! Wendy, why then is there a separate format to download for Mac users on fontsites like dafont.com? Is the zipped file accessed differently?

Me too, Maggie, but the downside of this is you forget what they look like and how perfect one buried deep in that disk just might be. One time I printed each one and categorized it---but did I look at those three three inch notebooks...NO! Like you--I settle in and love certain ones, and then enjoy font challenges on a bunch of sites to try out new ones (AND THEN DUMP THEM) I'm a fontaholic too, but you got me in spades! AHHHH--such fun!

Truly, love all the free fonts that y'all put up here. I like Da Fonts and other free fonts website.. They are cool!!
Just a note about "The Font Thing"... I keep only necessary fonts in my system font folder (system fonts, fonts needed by particular programs, etc.) all other fonts are in a separate folder on my hard drive (about 800+ files). I've set The Font Thing to search that folder when I want to load a particular font for use. It's sooo easy to do. Just go to "view", "options", "general", and type in the path to the separate folder. So far, all of the programs I use work with The Font Thing, so it's a snap to load only the fonts I want to use for a particular session. Just be sure to load them before opening the program you'll be using them in.

Just been reading through this thread. I like the font sites and saved them. I use fontxplorer. I've been using it for a long time. There is a free version but I had finally bought it, can't remember why though!!! Some features I wanted in that one! I just switched over to a different computer so my windows font folder is bare, just what is there, about 300. My "other font folders" are where I hide my treasures! Well over 1000 although I am impressed with some of the other totals I read in this thread!!!

There are some nice snow-and winter fonts there. The organization and presentation of the 1200 fonts here is quite nice.

WOW...what a great thread!! I am loving all the fonts!
I need to install the font thing...don't quite understand the system of using it, seems like you install what you want to use, then uninstall and put it back in the font thing? Well, I have the directions printed, hope I can learn as I go along.
Just wondering before I download the font thing, it was mentioned about the fonts that came orignally on the computer...what about the ones I have added after?...do you girls just go through and delete the ones you don't use? or is there a reset to get back to a default or something?

I usually remove (just right click and delete) any font I don't want active any more. But I save ALL Of them carefully in a folder outside of the shared/common files folder on the computer...so in case I ever want them again I can re-install it.
ON A PC!
Go to your control panel>fonts folder and
Before you delete an installed font, first right click it and "open" it--that way you can see just exactly which font it is, then click to close that.
If it's the one you want to get rid of then, right-click it on the icon and delete it
OPTIONAL--When you are in the font folder, just drag a font out onto your desktop (which makes a copy of it) that you can later move to a folder of fonts. Do this if you have not created this folder with this font in it already. I do this the minute I download the font, so this step is not necessary. Just be sure you have it filed somewhere, though so you don't have to go back through again. I don't know how the font thing works (I don't use it) but those who do LOVE IT!
Thank you Priss - all these tips are come in handy as I am trying to get organized! :)

Do the zipped files work on Macs? I have downloaded several fonts and all that have come in a zipped file don't work for me. However, I don't really know what I am to do with the file once it is on my harddrive. Maybe that's where I am going wrong. :o
Do any Mac users know about this?
I have downloaded several of the fonts, I had to download an updated version of Stuffit (free) in order to unzip them though. I manually added them to my Font Book, which is part of the system. They show up in PSE 3, and also in Word so that could be fun as well.

Thanks for the links. I LOVE new fonts. How many do you think it would take to slow down a computer? I have a laptop I use mostly (with an external hard drive for photos and scrapping files). My computer goes pretty slow when I'm using PSE 5. Wondered if it's the files or the fonts....

Some Photoshoppers say it is the "preview"-the little sketch of the font itself beside it in the dropdown menu that slows down a computer, and that this feature can be disabled if it is a problem for you. (I do not know how to do it, and have not turned it off). I think that 5 runs more slowly than previous versions, but find that if I have nothing else running on my computer, am off line, and have anti-virus temporarily disabled I get the best performance from the program.

I'm up for some fonts that'll work on a mac. You should be able to put them in the Fonts folder in 'your name'>library>Fonts.
Is it possible/safe to remove fonts from the Windows folder. I have over 200 in there - don't know where from, but do not want quite a few of them. I did download The Font Thing after reading this thread. Could I transfer the fonts to that font folder?
I have just discovered this site. I was wondering about fonts when I discovered this site and have gobbled up this thread. Saturday is planned as a full day of videos and learning. Love this site!
I have installed The Font Thing and it shows me all the fonts that are installed. I downloaded several fonts, unzipped them and loaded the fonts into a folder - Fonts . I cannot get the "Browse" tag to work. A ? comes up in the address area. I have put the address of the Fonts folder in there, but NOTHING. Help please!
