Anyone know how to make these?

It doesn't seem like it should be hard to do, but I'm not figuring it out on my own!

Hi Irene ...
I think that it may be text in the same colour as the background with just a bevel applied ... or a selection made from text (text layer discarded), Edit<Copy, Edit>Paste and then a bevel applied to it :)
Saved as a psd and used as a texture ...

Irene,
You mean something like this . . .
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1gD2fE7gmkLbHGxBukc2jFkDA8Xlom_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1gD2fE7gmkLbHGxBukc2jFkDA8Xlom)
What I did was type the words, add a simple outer bevel and then went to Styles & effects, visibility, invisible.
Karen :)

In a nutshell:
Create your background document. Now using the selection brush choose a brush that you want, a swirl or design and stamp it on the background, thus making multiple selections on your background paper. Ctrl+J to create a new layer from your selection. Deselect. Now apply the clear bevel to the new layer containing only the designs. Lower the bevel to around 10-13 and you have lovely embossed paper. Brushes should have a sharp edge to work the best. I took their brush class and that is how we did it.:)
Oh and for the text - add your text above the background, Ctrl+click to select it, go to the background with the selection still active and Ctrl+J to create a new layer from the background. Discard the original text layer and add a clear bevel to the new layer created from the background paper. Adjust the bevel and that's it!

Nancy,
Your way is much simplier than mine - thank you.

Your welcome Karen. Until I took the class I just never considered using the selection brush this way. I would have stamped with a regular brush on a new layer, selected it and then gone back and copied it from the background. This way eliminates a whole step.

Oh I am excited. I tried this Nancy and I made it work!! Thank you so much.
Karen I wrote down your steps too, but I still cannot locate the visibility part in the styles and effects areas. Not sure which wrong way I turned.

Hey these are good ideas and I want to save them. But I've been copying and saving each message to Word and trying to keep it organized until today. Today over at PET, there is a tread of great hints and tips and instructions on how to save the whole thread.
Right now I am clicking on thread tools; show printable version; then copying and saving to Word. As I said there are many other ways to save the thread, but this way I can edit out what I don't want to save. Then I can print it if I want to or leave it to search out whatever hint I remember saving.
Hope this helps someone else out.

estherf What a great hint - I now just print to a PDF and save it.

That's the way I've been doing it too, Esther. It works well when there are so many threads to play with. TYFS this direction to the Thread Tools buttons.

THIS is a great way to get this effect. That little selection brush has a whole bunch of hidden qualities. This is a great thread just in time for holiday textures. ...Thank you for these tips and this quick way to do it.

They offered a brush class at Scrap girls in the late summer and I took the class. They are not, however, offering it again but suggested they may just sell the class as a pdf but I haven't seen anything on that yet. That's too bad as it was an awesome class. I really learned a lot from it.

Thanks everyone for these great ideas! Maybe we should put "selection brush" in the forum about "What do you want to learn about". I'll go post it there

Is the selection brush an Elements thing or what is the comparable in Photoshop?

I'm pretty sure it's Elements only. I will do some digging though.

Hi Irene ...
The selection brush is Elements only ... it was a substitute for Quick Mask :)

Wendy - is there is quick explaination for doing this in CS2?
Thanks.

Hi Penny ...
To do it Nancy's way:
Change to Quick mask
Then paint using any of your brushes
Click on Edit in Standard Mode to convert the mask into a selection
(Then I had to inverse the selection Select>Inverse)
then Control J (Mac: Command J)
then apply your bevel ... etc
Hope this helps :)

Thanks Wendy - White waiting for a relpy, I was messing around with it and found the following:
New Layer - paint with your brush or do a text layer:
Filter - Bevel and Emboss using outer bevel, chisel hard and softened to 7 px.
Than on Layer Palette - change Fill to 0% - leave opacity at 100%
Looks pretty good. Will try Quick Mask.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Penny ...
I think that its actually easier not using the Quick mask ... try using a selection for from a custom shape too ... thats pretty cool !! :)

Thanks Wendy:) - thought I was on the right track. I haven't had time to do the custom shape tool yet with this but will do. The other day I made a Hummingbird Custom Shape from an image that I had drawn - bet it will be neat looking done this way.

I am a bit (or a lot) confused! I read this forum to be Photoshop, with another forum for Elements.
I have never heard of a selection brush in Photoshop! When I googled it I only see mentions of Elements.
DOES Photoshop have a selection brush? If so can some kind person tell me where to read about it? I've been using PS for several years but know nothing of this.
IF this is an Elements only tip I wish it could be labeled as such so I wouldn't waste time hunting something that doesn't exist.
Thanks

Hi Sallie ...
If you take a look at message 16 in this thread you will see that someone else asked if it was Elements only ...
It is ... but as I said in a later message you can use Quick Mask, Brushes or Custom Shapes to do the same thing in Photoshop :)
Have you tried the technique yet ?? :)

Wendy and Penny , thanks so much. I have both Elements and CS2, and figured if it could be done in Elements, it had to be able to be done in CS2! Off to play!

Karen :)
To get this to work in CS2 ...
Type the words, add the simple outer bevel, then under blending options choose blend mode saturation.
Here is a sample that I did in CS2

I should have chosen better colors & checked the spelling but I was just playing

Penny--try accessing these styles with the "f" features button at the bottom of the layer's palette in CS--sometimes a little quicker for ya.

Thanks Priss - I should know that. Still getting use to what all can be done with CS2 - so much fun and so much to learn. I started note cards for quick reference.
