View Full Version : Making Orbs ...

Wendy

A few of us were talking about making Orbs so I thought that I would start a thread about them.

Making basic Orbs is actually quite easy ... all you do is:

First crop your image square
Then do Filter>Distort>Polar Co-ordinates (Polar to Rectangular)
Next flip the image Horizontally
Then flip it Vertically
... and finally do Filter>Distort>Polar Co-ordinates (Rectangular to Polar)

... and there is your orb ..

You can then use the elliptical marquee to make a circle the same size as your central orb, then Invert the Selection, delete the excess and add a plain background. There are all sorts of possibilities ... and they make great embellishments for scrapbooking :)

Just experiment ... try flipping the orb and play with the blending modes ... it really is fun to do and you can get some totally unexpected results from images.

Here is one I did using a flower ...

Look forward to seeing some of your orbs :)

I love doing the orbs. I think folks would be very creative here with them. Let's give it a shot everyone and see what you come up with.
Here are a couple from photos of quilts I took at a quilt show.

Okay, I'm trying to resist being drawn into the orb craze again; the last time it happened, I was seeing circles in my sleep!! Here's my project that resulted from the last craze- you'll see why I don't want to do any more!!!
(I love the ones you guys are doing- I have a very similar snow one that I love for winter projects!!)

One of the great things about making them is they are just so much fun to make and you really can't tell which images make good ones until you have tried them.

They really are addictive

Okay - I did another one - must get some work done! This is small in size and also 300 dpi. I tried redoing to make it larger in size but could not duplicate what I had done yesterday. I am thinking about making it into a Stick Pin for the exchange - need to do something around the edge.

This is a sunset from our back yard. I really liked the way it turned out. Just looks like you are walking into the sunset.

Wow ...

All those orbs

Scrappi ... The snow orb turned out so delicate and its really pretty.

Christine .... Yours looks so Christmassy ... what did you use as an original image ??

Penny ... I love the dandelion it looks like its made of glass  and that sunset rocks !!

Nancy ... Do I see a flip in your suspension bridge ?? and what a great idea using orbs as tree baubles. I must try that :)

Mimi ... They are really pretty ... flowers make great baubles. I'll try and dig out some instructions for posting to pixentral so that you can do a larger view.

Sarah ... Now that will make a great Christmas card ... I just can't work out what you used as an original image, but its very effective.

Hope I didn't miss anyones orb out :)

Wendy
You are very observant. I did the original orb then duplicated it and rotated the layer 180 degrees and changed the blend mode to overlay. Then I merged the two layers, duplicated again and rotated 90 degrees this time. I then changed the blend mode to overlay and merged again so I have 4 rotations merged together. I then added a glass bevel from Jodi's missing styles for Elements.

Kay - the quilt has always been my favorite. It is just beautiful.

Everyone is doing such a great job on the orbs. They are quite fun and very addictive.

Penny I love the dandelion orb, thanks for letting us know what you used. Nancy your Christmas card is outstanding, what a great idea to use orbs for ornaments. Everyone who has posted an orb, I am soooo impressed, they are all beautiful.

I was thinking, wouldn't it be a great idea if when posting an orb, we could also post the original photo. That way it would give us an idea of what works well for something we would like to create.

Hi ...

I said that I would do some information about resizing when using Pixentral ... and I have eventually got round to it :)

I have found that these sizes work well ...

First resize your image using "save for web"
Set the longest side to 750 pixels and click on Apply
then adjust the quality slider until the image is around 150K.
and save it with a new name.

then go to
http://www.pixentral.com/index.php

Follow the instructions on the site and then when your image is uploaded copy the URL from just below the image (the one marked forums) and paste it into a message here :)

Hope this helps :)

Where do I go to install Orb Action for elements? I used the link http://www.caveofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/HowtTo.html from Wendy but it won't come up and starts with caveofice.org and then I don't know where to go. The only link I see is Photo Challenge /grant and I can't get in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi ..

If you are using PSE2, PSE3, PSE4 ... or any version of Photoshop then it installs very similar to this:

http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/HowtTo.html

(I think the link must have become a little corrupt)

Using PSE5 then I think its better to make a shortcut, leave it on your desktop and then use it whenever you need to install actions. So here are some instructions for that:

First make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Windows. Then create a Shortcut on the desk top to:

C: Documents and Settings>All Users>Application Data>Adobe>Photoshop Elements>5.0>Photo Creations>Special Effects>Photo Effects

To install an action just create a new folder (if you need to), pop the .atn file (or files) in it and then drop the folder on the shortcut ... restart Elements and the action then shows up in Special Effects>Photo Effects.

Hope this helps :)

You have Jodi's styles don't you? Try the clear bevel set #3, no 7 in the set I think and it will give a beautiful effect of glass. The blue one I posted earlier that was the suspension bridge has that bevel over it. It sort of looks like a black star but when you apply it wonderful things happen.

Nancy,

'Fraid I don't have Jodi's styles. I'm hoping to get a gift certificate from my folks for Christmas so I can subscibe to PET (my husband doesn't want to pay for a subscription web site - I know it's more, but I have to convince him). Maybe I'll sneak in her styles, too - I'm seriously considering it.

My mother-in-law is getting me Linda's Volume 2 CD. Between this and homeschooling, I'm waaaay to busy!

No more orbs for me today... Dinner, 3 kids to put to bed. Maybe I'll have time to download today's WBWT tonight!

This is the orb I made. I made the background with gradients. This is lots of fun, too. Ask how.

Started with snowflake crystal using your Orb effect . Did not like the look. Using
The Elliptical Marquee Tool selected the outer circle then added another selection ( ctrl J ) to new layer.Applied a style ( Deke Glass , Blue Glass). Added flower , which was red but turned blue when added to the orb.. Much to my surprise. Turned of the background layer and there it was.

Added some snowflakes using a filter by VanderLee . When I saved it for the web it added the white background. It all just happened by mistake. Also added a drop shadow.
This is what makes Elements so much fun.
Thanks Wendy for all that you do. All the Orbs really look great.

See all that blank space in there. That is all I see, too. Now, when I originally started to respond (I canceled that), I did the Quote Reply key and that brought up URL websites but no link. What do I need to do to see what everyone else seems to see. Is it because I have Zone Alarm on. If so, then why do some come through and some don't?

We have Wendy to thanks for this idea. January 2005 thread at PET:

1. File>New ... 7inches x 7 inches, 72 pixels/inch, mode RGB, contents white.

2. Select the gradient tool plus any gradient you like ... but simple two tone colour ones do seem to work best. (Don't use black and white)

3. Start of with the Linear Gradient.

4. Set the mode to difference ... and paint!!

5. Now admire the amazing effects ...

6. Try changing to diamond gradient ... experiment and ENJOY!!!

Thanks Wendy!!:D

I made the tree. I followed Wendy's advice and made a brush first, then used it in varying sizes to make the tree. Threw away a lot of strokes till I was happy, I also used two colors for a little variety. I did it on a transparent background so the "sky" would show through like a real tree.

This is off the subject but exactly what is an overlay?
I don't find anything in CS2 that says that. Is it only in Elements?
I know this is really elementary, but I need to clarify that term.

An overlay is often a transparent layer, Franny, that has been reduced in opacity, (or contains scattered things--like snowflakes, spots of color or such).
You slide your photo layer under a layer that is see-through, and that's what an overlay is. Sometimes kits you buy contain overlays, and what these are --are layers that can be placed over something in your layout and you see through them. I used a "Fairy Dust" overlay on THIS LAYOUT (http://www.scrappersguide.com/forums/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5366&cat=500) Look carefully at this layout, and see the little white spots on it? Those scattered dots are actually the top most layer of this project. And all that's on that transparent layer is some brushwork of scattered spots. Sometimes they're sheer and opaque like gauze (opacity of the layer controlled), and sometimes they are scattered tiny elements like they are here, where there is no opacity change, but where the the points of interest are few and far between. If you take a brush and "scatter" it---on a blank layer--you've created an overlay!

Does this help explain what an overlay is?

Penny
11-30-2006, 02:03 PM
Priss - if I understand what you are saying - then you can make your own overlays in CS2. I was glad Franny asked the question. I really like your layout that you pointed to.

Priss - if I understand what you are saying - then you can make your own overlays in CS2. I was glad Franny asked the question. I really like your layout that you pointed to.

YUP--fancy name, perhaps, but easy easy easy to do! TECHNICALLY--when you reduced the opacity of that "type" layer in one of the WBWT's, you created an overlay of the type. Now if you saved that "blank" layer that had a cloud on it or a bit of sheer painting on it, or a scattering of butterflies, etc all by itself as a png or a psd file, you'll have made an overlay.

Penny

Thanks.

Franny

Ok then here is a slight variation on Orbs ...

Image 1 is my original ... I was playing around with moving the camera whilst taking a photograph. Its a fibre optic christmas decoration.

Image 2 ... I orbed it

Image 3 ... I used the elliptical marque and made a circle the size of the orb then copied it to its own layer, created a layer below it and filled it with black.

Image 4 ... Duplicated the orb on its own layer, rotated the duplicate 90 degrees and changed the blend mode of that layer to screen.

I left the images quite large so that you could see them ... just click on the thumbnail and then scroll across and down to see all 4.

... Finally I duplicated the layer again and rotated it 180 degrees, gave it a new background and this is the final result :)

Hi, I downloaded the kaleidoscope and put it where everyone said it should be put in the V5 software. I looked and looked for it in the filter palettes on the right-hand side of the editor screen. It never appeared! Then I read a thread on PET that explained that it would be in the drop-down list of filters at the top of the screen! Was I ever suprised! Well, I've spent more time on those and then turning them into orbs! I really can't decide which kaleidoscope or orb to post. They are all so beautiful!

I came across this thread earlier this evening and was amazed with all the orbs everyone has done; they are all so beautiful!!
I finally decided to give it a try but it has turned out evil looking...hard to believe the picture I used was a Xmas tree. I used the liquify filter, a few swirls and this is the result.

Well I eventually got round to making a kis using the orb I made earlier ..

Here is a link to layout I did using it http://www.scrappersguide.com/forums/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5500

and here is a link to the kit http://www.scrappersguide.com/forums/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5499

I made one of the papers from the orb itself then made a brush from the orb ... I used the orb brush to make the other four papers then cut the frames and flowers out of the papers.

First time I ever tried that :D :D

Hi ...

Glad that you like the kit ... I really wanted to show that are all sorts of possibilities for using orbs omce you have made them (and they are such fun to make as well)

The kit was quite easy to make ... just a brush from the orb which I used very large scale on one of the papers and small scale in a pattern on another. Then a H&S layer on both of those to make the alternative colours ... The colours just came from a lowered opacity image of the orb and I though they were perfect for a summbner wedding :)

Hi ...

The best way is to make a copy of your image and then resize it to say 750 max on the longest side and around 150K file size (that means that it all shows on the Pixentral page) and resave it with a new name.

Then just upload as normal but copy the URL fro below the image the one marked forums ... then paste it into your message :)

It was a white and red flower with a large yellow center. Being horticulturally challenged, I can't tell you what it was-not a rose or daisy...

I spent the day making 8 different patterns and using them to make gift tags for a little gift. This is just way too much fun.

Now if I can just figure out how to post things correctly...

I've been wanting to ask but just haven't had time. Gradiant painting was mentioned in this thread and I was wondering if someone would explain this in more detail? I've seen some beautiful designs but when I try it I don't get anything except muddied colors. What do you mean when you say "just paint"? Do you just click and drag? Do you change colors? It sounds like it should be easy but I don't seem to be doing something right. Thanks.

Hi Wendy,
It's #75. Also, I've been wanting to ask you, where do you find semi-transparent brushes? Thanks for all your help. Sarah

Wendy
12-10-2006, 01:37 AM
Hi Sarah ...

The key to this is to set the mode of the gradient tool to difference and then drag the first gradient across the whole of the screen.

After that you just do little short stroke ... some larger ones to and watch the colours change.

Just choose a two colour gradient from any of the sets .. :)

The semi transparents brush ... not as easy to find but there is a least one in the default set ... (leaves) and its quite easy to make your own too.

When you define a brush black will be solid and shades of gray make semmi transparent areas :)
