View Full Version : hard bound book question

I started digital scrapbooking when my kids were born in 1999. I took a long hiatus starting in 2003, and I'm only now getting back to it. I just purchased PSE and I'm still getting used to it. Thanks to Linda, I love the software, although prior to finding her, I was ready to chuck it!
My question is this. Due to practical reasons, all my old scrapbook pages are 8 1/2" x 11", portrait. The hard bound book companies all seem to do 12x12, 8x8 or 8 1/2 x 11, landscape. Are there any companies out there who do letter size portrait? I love the idea of printing multiple albums for family, but I didn't want to do it sideways, flip book style. Any ideas?

Heritage Makers just came out with a 7 5/8 x 10 portrait hardbound book. Not quite 8.5 x 11, but pretty close! I also have a lot of 8.5 x 11 scrapbook layouts, so I'm just working on one of these books with my pages. I resize them down a bit so they fit (and shift them over a bit to compensate for the binding), and so far they have been uploading well. I have a sample book that's just beautiful, so I can't wait to finish mine. (as a disclaimer...I am a Heritage Makers (http://www.storybookstoshare.com)consultant).
Good luck in your search!

I posted another reply about portrait/landscape photo books under "photoshop beginners>scrapbook layouts. Blurb.com (www.blurb.com) makes 8x10 books (portrait and landscape). The prices are pretty good, too, and so is the printing. I just had my daughter's baby book printed there and I was very pleased with the printing. I had to resize some of the pages, but that wasn't a problem for me. Make sure you leave about a 1/2 inch margin for binding.
Check out VioVio.com - they do portrait 8.5 x11 portrait in soft cover and I believe in hardcover as well. They just started offering hardcover - and I haven't ordered one of those yet. But the quality of their softcover books is good and their customer service is excellent!
Another resource is Ubuildabook.com - they do a variety of sizes in both hard and soft cover including 8.5 x11 portrait.

Does Blub let you do full bleed printing? When I checked out their site it looked like it was just a fill in the blank sort of thing.

What exactly is full bleed printing?
And is there anything else I need to pay attention to when ordering these kinds of books?
Thanks for all the replies on the portrait/landscape question!

You can do photobook memories, she has all sizes you want to. She prints also full bleed (complete page covering, no edge) and complete cover-printing. Very nice! www.photobookmemories.com

Wags,
Blurb does do full-bleed printing. I scrapped all my pages for my baby book I had printed in either 11x8.5 or 12x12, and had to resize them to fit the book. The bottom margin on the 12x12 pages, for some reason got shaved off, but not enough to affect the photos. I don't know if it was just me, or the actual printing. Blurb advises that you print out your page beforehand to see if it looks good. I didn't follow the advice. Having said that, I was extremely pleased with the printing quality, compared to another company I had been using for my photo books. I also loved the jacket sleeves for the books. They have good customer service, too. I had a problem at first uploading my book (I use a mac), and the cust. service rep looked into the problem, which led to the latest update (Aug 31).

Wow, y'all. I did not know what full bleeding was. As I am seriously contemplating doing come bound books as Christmas gifts, this knowledge will come in handy. My family and I took a trip to Norway last summer. My plan is to surprise them with the books. And, now, ooohhh, I got another idea of transferring my baby book to a hardbound book. How do you all have time for all of these projects???

Sokkie,
I haven't heard of photobook memories. I'll have to try them out, too. I like the fact that they offer 12x12.
