It doesn't exist in PSE 5.0. I use Grant's tools - they are free and have a layer mask tool in them.
You can download them from here: http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html
(Make sure you get the ones for PSE 5.0).
Then follow the links on the left for directions to install.

Thanks Trish, however the installation instructions are for PSE 3 and I don't think that they are the same for PSE 5. Do you know?

Hi Janet ...
The instructions for PSE5 are different ... first thing is did you pick up the tool set for PSE5 as there are different sets for each version ?
The tool set is a set of actions (made specifically for Elements) and to install them this is the way I use:
Installing actions PSE5. First make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Windows. Then create a Shortcut on the desk top to:
C: Documents and Settings>All Users>Application Data>Adobe>Photoshop Elements>5.0>Photo Creations>Special Effects>Photo Effects
To install an action set just create a new folder (if you need to), pop the .atn file (or files) in it and then drop the folder on the shortcut ... restart Elements and the action then shows up in Special Effects>Photo Effects.
Grant's tools are already in a folder so you donlt need to create another one for them :)
Do let us know how you go on with the install :)

Thanks Wendy, I still have a question. When I get to photo effects, create a short cut is grayed out and there are two files under it called frames and image effects. What do I do from here? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Janet ...
Now that is something that hasn't come up before ... I haven't had any problems like that on my windows PC.
Lets see if any of the others have come across it before ?
Wendy
PS ... Just a though it may be worth restarting you computer and then trying to do it again :) ad if that doesn;t work then try putting Grant's tools folder manually in there instead of creating the shortcut.

I tried to manually install Grant's tools and I can see the name Grant's tools at the top but there is no icons to click on underneath. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Janet ...
Just go back and check for me that inside Photo Effects you have the folder with Grant's tools in it (there isn't another folder within that one is there ??)

Thanks so much, Wendy!!! Bingo, that was it, I had unzipped but didn't realize that there was another folder inside. It seems to be working now. I will have to try it out now!!!
Thanks again.

Hi Wendy...thanks. I found these instructions yesterday and for the life of me I cannot find the file you are using here - Photo Creations. I tried making a shortcut and Windows can't find this file. I have look through the tree of PSE files and can't find this one. Same goes with the instructions for Grant's tools. Any suggestions. I really want to do this window pane action for my picture of the Grand Canyon. Thanks for your help! Gwen

Hi Gwen ...
To be able to see those files (PSE5 only)
First make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Windows :) ... once you have done that then you should be able to see them :)
Wendy
Thanks Wendy...been there done that. The only thing I can think of is that I don't have PSE5 on C drive where windows is but on F drive, my external harddrive. But stuff is done. I just went back to PSE4. Thanks again.

Hi Gwen ...
Just a thought are you using Vista ??
If so then the path is:
CARE ... Vista is C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\Special Effects\Photo Effects

Hi! I am new to this site and am very happy to find it! I have the new elements 5 and have followed the directions of Grants for the masks, but I can't seem to find the cache files he says to delete from (Effects and filter). I am running Windows XP by the way. Thanks!
I look forward to learning as much as possible from this board!

Janet
You need to back up one folder level. If you are inside the Photo Effects folder, you can't create a shorcut of it. If you back out one level so that you are in the folder that CONTAINS the Photo Effects folder, then you can click on the Photo Effects folder and create a shortcut of it. HTH!

I am in win XP. How do you turn Show hidden folders and files on? I am so new to this. I need baby steps to this. I also tryed to email you private and I got this (you have turned off private messages. You may not view or send private messages until you turn on by editing your profile) How do you do this?

Hi ...
I am not really the right person for this as I am a Mac user ... but let me see if I can find how to do it.
Try this:
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
Note To access Windows Explorer, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
Hope it works OK :)

Helen,
I removed your e-mail address, as there are spam-bots out there that search forums for e-mail addresses. Just post in the forums here and someone will help you.

I do not see the ripple on in grant tools. when I try to use any one of the designs it says, the command "Make " is not currently available. I am doing the The Magic of Masking # 8 in digital scrapper Premier edition lesson. Does anybody know how to do this one. #8 lesson. I have Photoshop elements 5.0

Hi ...
The Ripple Frame was a workaround that Linda used on one of her CD to give you access to a layer mask. So you need to use the Layer Mask from Grant's tools ...
The error you are getting is because you can't apply a mask to a background layer ... just go to the layers palette double click on the background layer and accept the name it gives you.
You will then be able to use the mask :)

Hi Marcie ...
Grant did some instructions on how to use the tools ... depending on which version of Elements you have then your set may not have all of them ... but take a look at the ones you have :)
