Maybe this has been discussed before; I may have missed it. I am trying to backup the organizer in PSE5. I moved my photos and elements to my new external drive and they are all noted in the catalog. I have been trying to do the original backup by going to File, Backup Catalog. PSE5 stops responding at 33% every time and I have to use the task manager to shut it down. Does anyone know why this would happen? I am not getting an error message. The program just stops working.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I recently read that in some cases it appears that the program has stopped, and even if you look in the Task Manager on the Applications tab, it indicates the program is not responding. It seems to happen at 33% and 66%. But if you give it enough time, it starts up again. Hopefully your program just needs more time to finish.

I haven't loaded in my #5 yet but on my #4 version I will do 2 things before I back up to avoid problems.
First I do a File>Catalog>Recover, then I reconnect all missing files and then I back up. It does seem to stick at 33% & 66% so I try to do it when I'm not going to use it for quite some time.
Good luck!

Thanks for responding. I work from home and will be working on my work computer today, so I will let my personal computer have all the time it needs and see what happens. I made multiple attempts last night and at one point I did go back to see if I could generate the recovery myself and reconnect missing files, but it told me there weren't any. I was so disappointed last night when this happened because I want a backup just in case of a crash.

I let the program work and it did exactly as you said. It moved on past 33% and I was able to get to the next screen. I let it start to do the backup and then PSE5 told me there was something wrong with my CD writer. I had a hunch I did have a problem with it. It has not been working well for saving files to disk. So now I will be trying to replace that before I can complete my backup. Thanks again for all your help.

When you do a backup, Organizer will always do a Recover and it always stops at 33% then moves pretty fast to 66% and then takes a long time to complete according to the amount of files you have. It will then begin the backup.
The Recover is a utility that compacts and repairs the database so that it is more efficent. You can do it manually from within Organizer with File>Catalog>Recover It is a good idea to do this manually ever-so-often and it also fixes some little problems when things start acting funny in Organizer.
