Journaling (top right): Mom did not know she was having twins-it was quite a surprise! Charlene is older by two minutes. We were 6 weeks premature and Mom barely got to the hospital in time. We were in incubators for about 6 weeks; Charlene weighed 4 lbs and Darleen weighed 3.15 lbs. Most of the early pictures are difficult to tell which twin is which as the pictures weren’t marked. As we got older small differences started to be evident. Charlene also had a birthmark on her hand but you still had to remember who had the birthmark! Mom spelled our names a little different, but for all of her life she would spell my name “Charleen” on my birthday cards. It was one of Mom’s little quirks! The picture below was in our local newspaper when we were 9 months old (6/18/50). If you look closely you will notice Dar’s name is not spelled correctly!

Burlington Free Press Newspaper caption: Any resemblance between the two youngsters pictured above is not coincidental as Charlene Dale Ryan, left, and Darlene Gail Ryan, right, are the twin daughters of Mr. & Mrs. George Ryan, 56 Walnut Street. Eight months old when the photo was taken, they are nine months old today. The twins mother is the former Christine Tombly, and they have a sister, Ellen Rose, aged six years, and a brother, Thomas "Butch", aged two and a half years. Their grandparents are Mrs. Ellen Twombly of 47 1-2 Lafountain Street, and Mr. and Mrs. John Ryan, 23 Central Avenue.
