I'm trying to learn the type borders technique shown in this WBWT, but when I click on the background, and then on my square again, and type the letter "L" as Linda suggests, I just get the Lasso tool, and not a new type layer.
What am I doing wrong?

Do you have the type tool selected before you click on the bg? Typing "L" is also a shortcut for selecting the lasso tool.

If I choose the text tool after clicking my square, it just adds text to the existing text layer.
I can't get it to add another text layer.
If I keep the move tool, as you say, it selects the Lasso tool.
I have followed Linda's insrtuctions, but cannot make it do what she does.

You'll need to click farther away from your existing text bar. Look in your move tool and see if it says "Automatically select layer." Turn that off. Also, there may be a setting (I can't remember off the top of my head), either in the Text tool or in the Preferences that makes it easier to select existing text or harder. Sorry, I don't have PSE up right now to check. (Are you using 5 or 6?)

Thanks
I'll try the things that you suggested and hope it works.
I'm using 5.0, as although I did upgrade to 6.0, I just find it so much easier to see the brushes in 5.0

It worked!
I must have been clicking too close to the existing text.
Many Thanks.

Good. I'm glad you are sorted out. In Edit->Preferences->General (I've got 5.0 up now), there is a setting called "Relaxed Text Selection" - I *think* if you disable this, then it would be easier to add your text without selecting the other.
