Default Word Cut-Out of a Photo

There has been a request for the technique I used here, as well as for My 8 Iron layout, here.

So here is the way I did, what I'm calling, a Word Cut-Out of a Photo:

    1. Drag and drop a photo into your layout, resizing as needed.

    2. Select the TEXT tool and choose the font you want to use (I used Impact). Type out the word you want, then position and size it so it fills the width of your photo.

    3. Right click the text layer's name in the layers palette, and choose SIMPLIFY LAYER.

    4. Select the RECTANGLE tool. Click and drag to draw a rectangle that covers the photo just down to the top of the text. It doesn't matter what color your rectangle is.

    5. In the layers palette, right-click the name of the rectangle layer and choose MERGE DOWN.

    6. Drag the photo above the newly created text/rectangle layer.

    7. Hold down the ALT key and click between the text & photo layers in the layers palette.

Very good instructions. I just tried making my first one and it came out great (I think anyway).

So glad it worked for you. I'm always nervous about posting instructions....are they correct? ....are they clear?

Yes, your instructions were great! I did it with success, too! I found it works best with a photo that is pretty much a solid color at the bottom, rather than one with a lot of detail. Thanks very much for sharing that!!

Thanks. I actually shared first prize right here at Scrapper's Guide. I think that's why the magazine was interested in publishing the layout....brags them up when one of the techniques they featured is "successful."
