    Question Updating PE7 Organizer

How do I move photos from previous PE 4,5,6, into PE7? I have found how to mover files from My Photos, but I don't know how to find photos that were downloaded directly into the 4,5,or 6 Organizers. So I have photos scattered throughout all three previous versions and want to get them all in PE7 which I have just started to work with. You might have to "dumb down" your answer.

Okay, the photos aren't "in" the organizer. The Organizer only points to them on your hard drive and makes a thumbnail to display in the organizer.. So, if you've "imported" them into the organizer and then deleted them off your hard drive, then you've deleted your pictures. I really hope that's not the case.

Usually, there is a "convert option." In PSE 7, open the Organizer and then choose File->Catalog and a dialog pops up. Click on the "Convert" button on the right. You will then have to find your catalogs (the will have a .psa extension) and ask PSE 7 to convert them.

This will create several catalogs. Once you have converted the old catalogs, then come back and we'll walk you through trying to get all the pictures into one catalog.

Do you still have the older versions of PSE on your computer?

Thanks Trish--yes I still have all 4,5,&6 in my computer. I am having trouble finding the photos. But I just thought maybe I should look in the Program files?? Might they be there? They don't up under "My Pictures". I am not very literate about computers so I get easily flummoxed if something isn't where I expect it to be.

If you imported them using the organizer... Then the organizer may have stored them somewhere else. Probably under Documents and Settings/[your user name]/Application Data.

Open the Organizer and go into folder location view - above each folder it will show the path.

Are you 100% sure you did not delete them from the hard drive.

Yes, I know they are still on the hard drive. I save everything, plus if I open those programs I can work on those photos. Thanks for the tip on locating them. I'll try that.

    Jackie,

Once you have photos identified in Organizer, if you want to move the original location of the photo (such as in a My Pictures folder) to another location (maybe another folder) make sure you do this in Organizer. Highlight the photo(s), go to File > Move and click on Browse and tell PSE where you want to move the photo. Otherwise, PSE looks at the "link" it made to the photo's original location and it's not there. It doesn't have a clue where you moved it. Using the PSE Move feature will maintain the link and you will not get "Missing File" messages. Missing File messages can interfere with your converting your Organizer Catalog files up to a newer version. I've had this issue and it's not fun.
