Am sure there is SAVE CHANGES box, with a little tiny box that says APPLY TO ALL in our future. Hopefully anyway. I was watching an episode of the Grid a few months back and they were talking about fixes and irritants with an Adobe staffer-that one was mentioned-so had to chuckle when I read this thread.
Do keep in mind that over at the Adobe site, they do have a place you can post request for future enhancements/bugs. I would recommend that whenever there is something like that you bump into that would improve the product, do post on their site.

Correct AnswerRe: Close all files at once?
Here's the script:
https://acrobat.com/#d=VaF9k1kNWBBOHLuSWDjVfA
How to install:
1. download and unzip
2. right click on the script and choose copy
3. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Presets\Scripts
4. right click in an empty space in that folder and choose paste
Now your automation tools text will light up in your files drop down menu, click on your new "close files without saving."Dell XPS i7, 3.4 processor, 16gb ram, 3tb hdd (2), windows 8, PSE9, IE10

Thanks—that's interesting. I wonder if it will work on a Mac? But then, I'm not usually working with 100s of files.

I decided to test this out and discovered it works great on a Mac. Use this file path to place your script file:
Applications > Photoshop Elements (your version) > Presets > Scripts
Thanks for discovering this Orpix!*************************
