I would like to understand more about focal length. How do you know what it is when you're taking the picture? On a lens that you manually 'zoom' is this what you're talking about? When I bought my camera (and I haven't gotten any other lenses yet) I really had trouble with the numbers on the lens and what they mean and how to understand how to use them. Any help is appreciated!

Lorretta, when we talk about focal length we are indeed talking about the zoom settings on the lens and where we set it. If you look at your lens you can phyically see the numbers, or you can check your photos metadata
The numbers on a lens; example 55-200mm 1:4-5.6 tell you the zoom range is 55- 200mm, if there is only one number you have a fixed lens ( prime ) (ex: 50mm ) the 1, not sure about all lens models, but, I think on Nikon just means first generation, the next set of numbers is the widest aperature you can set your camera to. So using the example at 55mm you can set the aperature no wider then F/4 and at 200mm no wider then F/5.6. On the narrow end you probably could go to F/22 or higher at any zoom length. If there is only one number, example 2.8, that means at any zoom your widest aperature can be set to F2.8 HTHNikon D60 and Nikon D700

So even though the camera is set on aperature mode you still have to watch the ss and if too slow raise the iso?. I thought the camera was suppose to automatically set everything except the aperature in this mode. I'm still trying to get around my head that raising iso increases ss

Joanne, to be sure, look in your cameras manuel, it will tell you want the camera will set in each mode. On my D700, Aperature mode you select the aperature and ISO, the camera sets the correct shutter speed.
SS, Aperature and ISO all work together to gather the light into the cameras sensor. Say you have your aperature set to the widest possible setting for your lens, the ISO is set to 200, but the shutter speed is 1/40, raising the ISO will bring more light into the sensor and enable you to raise the SS.Nikon D60 and Nikon D700

Thank you Connieg for all your help
Just typing out the question and reading your reply will surely help me to remember this concept. I know now why my ss was so slow in many of my pics. I'm taking all my pics this month in aperature mode just to get the concept pat in my head.

That first photo is breathtaking, the one with the yellow/orange.
My name is Beverly.
I use Photoshop CS2.
I use Windows Vista (but preferred XP)
I have been using Google Chrome, until they updated me and I lost all my good toolbars. Now, I also go back to Internet Explorer from time to time.
