Default Converting files from .psd to .tif?

I'm finding my hard drive is filling up fast and I need to start reducing what is on it. I can't find the thread about converting .psd files to .tif files that I feel like I have just recently read. I want to make sure I'm doing it right and what the advantages and disadvantages would be to doing that. I've been copying some of my Premier files and they are averaging over 1 GB each. If I change the .psd files will that reduce them enough to bother with the effort? And then can I use them in PSE just like the .psd files? Thanks for any advice or input!

    Hi Loretta ...

I think this is the thread you are looking for ...

    http://digitalscrapper.com/forums/sh...plate-Previews

Must admit that I have never investigated files sizes too much ... but my initial thoughts are that if you have lots of psd file (as I have) then it would be quite time consuming to change them all over and I wonder if even then its only going to buy you some time before your drive fills up.

I wonder if another solution may be gradually convert your psds to tiff and in the meantime to buy an exernal hard for extra storage. I have several attached to my computer and they really are excellent.

I wouldn't bother myself. If you watch for sales, you can get 2tb or 3tb externals for very reasonable prices.

I have 4 externals myself. Only one is hooked up and it's the one that has an on and off switch.

Good luck deciding what to do.

Whatever you decide, just remember that you can convert them via batch processing, so it would not be such tedious work.

I, personally, would do it for things like templates and completed saved layered layouts, but not for smaller stuff. Saving from .psd to .tiff for your completed, layered layouts can save you a ton of space. And then you can move those to an external hard drive for safe keeping, as well.

I have tried using batch processing to convert psd files to tiff, but it does not use the lzw compression so the files are not smaller in size. Does anyone know of a way to do this with the lzw compression?

Or is there an action for Photoshop Elements to convert psd files to lzw tiff files?

Maybe I did something wrong but when I did batch processing to change psd to tiff, it flattened the layers. I started converting psd template files last week thinking it would make uploading to offline storage faster and use less space. I had to do them one at a time and again maybe a setting wasn't right, I just used PSE's default, but the files were many times larger than the psd files so I converted them back. When I save layouts as layered tiff files they are smaller than their psd counterparts. I have 2 4tb ehds and decided to spend time scrapping instead of converting.

Dairygal, what software are you using to convert PSDs to TIFFs? Elements 7? I convert all my PSE templates that come in the Premier kit to TIFFs, but I do them one at a time. Only takes a few minutes. I always create my scrapbook pages in TIFF, so there is no converting. And I always use the PSE default (low compression) when creating/saving my layouts and templates. I did like Jeanne and bought some EHDs on which to place many of my files to free up space on my computer HDD.

Jeanne, I am not familiar with PSE, but in PS you can batch process with actions. I created an action for saving as a tiff with the specs that Darcy posted here once and used that action to batch process via Bridge. All my psd files were turned into tiffs with exactly those settings and considerable smaller than the psds.

Wonder if that is an action that would work in PSE?
