I have a lot of scrapbooking kits, which means I have a lot of pretty little elements as well (to put it mildly). But there are times when I just want a simple shape, a quiet hint of something in the background to support the theme of my design. There are a lot of shapes included with Photoshop, plus there are thousands more I could find on-line.
Today I’m going to show you how to create a digital stencil using the Shape tool and a paint brush. I’ve chosen to work with a leaf, but you can use any shape you like. As an extra added bonus — when you are finished, there is no soap and water clean-up required!

Hi, Is there any way to fade out the edges of the painted area? Or is there any way to make the edges look more realistic, less like a “cloud” effect? Thanks, Mo
Hi Maureen, you could try changing the opacity of the brush from 30% to about 15% as you paint near the edges.
Awesome tutorial – thanks so much. I just got around to trying this today. Love it.
