I love patterned paper, but it can sometimes be hard to use. I tend to gravitate to the solids in a kit, but still love those patterns.

One of the problems I face when using patterned paper is that it is hard to journal on. Even a slightly patterned paper can be distracting and make my journaling lose its focus.

I think I have found a way to have the best of both worlds — use that pretty patterned paper, but still have journaling that is sharp and readable.

P.S. I have to explain why my husband is wearing underwear on his head. We have a card game that we love to play called “The Great Dalmuti.” The winner of each round gets to be the “Great Dalmuti.” In our house that also means they get to sit in the nicest chair, wear a crown and have the Peon (or scum) serve them. The Peon is the person that lost the round. In our version the Peon has to sit on the floor and wear (clean, brand new) men’s underwear on their head. Believe me, you don’t want to lose at this game. This day, on her birthday, my daughter was on a winning streak and my husband, who was losing, got to do a lot of service.

Not only is the tutorial a really good one (I usually just put a ‘vellum’ piece under my journaling), but I love the Peon (scum) idea! I’m adopting it as my own! ;) Love, love the layout with all its bump outs!

what a great idea! I think this would also work on a plain paper that needs to be just a little lighter to show off the journaling.

I love this tip and know I will use it. I shy away from patterned paper too. This gives me courage to try it.

Of course, you are going to have to publish rules to that game!!!

What a great idea! I struggle with journaling on patterned paper, and usually end up using vellum as well. So nice to add new tools to my stash!

Dalmuti is a family favorite at my house too, I told my husband about the underwear for the Peon and I think we’re going to have to spring that on our friends the next time we play! :)

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, !!

Any tuts please on how you are able to complete such a great page ?

(I have googled “out of box” and got such complicated tuts I don’t know where to start)

    Thank you

Great tip. I sometimes use the layer style external glow option around 50-70 then reduced to 50%. You can change the color of the glow and make it similar to the background dark or light color – this makes the text more readable.
