Take Better Phone Photos, Part 7, Wrap-Up

Take Better Phone Photos, Part 7, Wrap-Up

by Jenifer Juris

When it comes to taking better phone photos, there are two key takeaways:

  • Awareness
  • Movement

Awareness

Taking a second to truly LOOK at the phone screen before taking any photo is one of the easiest things you can do to improve your pictures.

Ask yourself 3 simple questions:

  • Is there anything distracting behind the subject?
  • Are there any shadows or mixed lighting on the subject?
  • Do the lenses on the phone need to be cleaned (are there streaks of light or haziness in my photos)?

The answers to those questions will help you determine if any movement is needed to correct something.

Movement

Movement of ourselves or our phones is often the best way to correct or improve our phone photos. Taking a step or two or turning around can take a photo from average to much better.

Think about the movement in 3D space:

  • Move forward or backward to either hone in on the subject or better capture the scene.
  • Move sideways or turn to remove distracting backgrounds or get better lighting.
  • Move the phone up or down to connect with the subject or eliminate unnecessary foreground.

One Last Thing: Edit Your Photos

The last thing we can do to improve our phone photos is to edit them.

Smartphone cameras have come a long way in the past 10+ years, and they will continue to improve as technology advances. But even with these improvements, most of my phone photos still need some editing for the photos to look their best.

If you need help recognizing what edits to make in order for your phone photos to look their best, I recommend my class, An Eye for Edits. Even though it was written a few years ago, the information is as relevant today as it was the day I wrote it. It’s a class for both Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop.

If you are an Adobe Photoshop user, I also offer two classes that are more advanced photo editing classes. Next Level Editing, Part 1 – Fixing Challenging Photos and Next Level Editing, Part 2 – Making Creative Edits are classes that build on the information you learn in An Eye for Edits.

All three of these classes are on a special discount for a short time after this blog post is published. Those sales will end Thursday, July 9, 2026.

Final Wrap-Up

If you found this blog series to be helpful and you’d like to have a combined PDF manual of all the posts in this series in one place, I have created one for you. You can find it for a small fee in Marketplace. Also, if you miss the sale window for the classes mentioned above, you can also find a coupon code for each class in the Take Better Phone Photos combined manual.
