Polka Dot Grunge with a Layer Mask
by Jenifer Juris
Turn a simple polka dot paper into wonderful polka dot grunge using the help of the magic wand tool and a layer mask.
For this tutorial you’ll need:
- A paper with small polka dots
- A solid background paper
- Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop
If you’d like to follow along exactly, download the papers I’m using in the All-In-One link below.

Such a cool technique! Thanks Jenifer!

Excellent tutorial Jennifer. I can see so many uses for that method with all sorts of papers.
Yes, it’s a great technique that you can use with many patterns, not just polka-dot! 🙂
Thank you so much for this tutorial and papers, Jenifer.
You’re welcome! 🙂
I want to thank you for a complete tutorial package. It gives me the freedom to view the video whenever I want and a set of written instruction that I can see ad mark-up with my own notes to self. Plus I like the paper ad can use it with other projects. Thanks again !!

You’re welcome!
this is a terrific technique. This adds so many more creative options to digital design, especially digiscrapbooking. I’m looking at all my patterned paper with a new purpose.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the tutorial and you’re right, the options are endless! 🙂
Is there any way to download videos from this series to put on my computer to watch later?

WoW. It always amazes me how easy you make these creations for us to follow. Thank you……..can’t wait to give this a whirl!
You’re welcome! 🙂
At the very beginning of the tutorial, you tell us to download the dotted paper, then click Windows/images/consolidate all to tabs. I can’t complete that action because it’s grayed out (not available). I’m using the PSE free trial on a Windows 10 laptop…
Hi Claudia! Usually, this means that you have a setting in Preferences turned off that keeps you from being able to dock floating documents. If you turn that setting on, it should work. 🙂
I am really new at this. I tried looking for Preferences and even looked at the PSE website but couldn’t find it (at least regarding your above comment). Would you please guide me? Thank you!!!
Hi Claudia.
To open Preferences, press Ctrl K (Mac: Cmd K). Hope that helps!
Hello I’m trying to download the all-in-one download, but my computer says it can’t be downloaded securely. I have downloaded from your site before with no problems, even one file already this morning. Is there a work around so that I can get these files for the the grunge polka dot? Thank you!
Hi Hannah, have you tried refreshing your browser? Sometimes that’s all you need to do in order for things to work normally again. If that doesn’t work, let us know.
Sorry about that, Hannah. The link has been fixed. It should no longer give you that message.
