Mystery Box – Keep Layers

Could you use a little help sorting through the gobbledygook of warning dialog boxes in Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop?
Mystery Box Series
In my Mystery Box series, we’ll take a look at sorting through all the words and options of some of Adobe’s most common warning dialog boxes to simplify them and get you back to doing what you do best … telling your stories.
Mystery Box – Keep Layers
- As a digital scrapbooker, when will you most commonly encounter this warning box? Opening a layered PSD grayscale template.
- Why does it happen? The document you are opening contains features that your software does not recognize. No worries!
- Most of the time, this happens because the person who designed the template you opened saved the template in a different software application. For example, if a designer creates a template in Photoshop, but you open it in Photoshop Elements, you will get this dialog box.
- This only happens with layered documents (PSD or TIFF), not flat ones (JPEG or PNG).
- 99.9% of the time, the “unsupported features” are behind the scenes and you will not miss them or notice a change when proceeding.
- What should you do? Always click Keep Layers.
This box seems pointless, doesn’t it? As a scrapbooker, I see no reason to EVER click Flatten. In other non-scrapbooking worlds, however, there are people who do not need the layers or features from the original document.
How To Proceed
- After clicking Keep Layers, you will be able to proceed as normal. Any adjustments will be made behind the scenes and you should not notice any changes.
- As a scrapbooker, how can you avoid this warning box? You cannot avoid it.
‼️ Attention Template Designers
If you are someone who designs grayscale templates for scrapbookers, there is something you can easily do to avoid this from happening to your customers.
- Save your templates in the software application that most of your customers use. So, if the majority of your customer base uses Photoshop Elements, then save your templates in PSE before packaging them up.

Thanks Jen for this tip! I have just recently run into this error and wasn’t sure what to do. Luckily I chose correctly! Always appreciate your expertise.
I don’t even have a current version of PSE. I was just looking at possibly purchasing PSE, but I realized that Adobe only supports it for 3 years. That’s a lot on top of a subscription (14.98 CND every month!)
I might wait for a good sale!
Can PSE open a layered Tiff?
I think you might be comparing two different things, Marlene.
Yes, Photoshop Elements is not a subscription. You pay once and your software is licensed for three years. Three years is an appropriate amount of time. Most people upgrade in that time frame anyway. And yes, PSE will open TIFF. 😀
Adobe Photoshop is a subscription. Once you stop paying, you loose access to your software.
This was extremly helpful. Thank you
Thanks Jen! The Mystery Box explanations are a great idea..
