How To Convert an EPS File Into a PAT File in PS
by Jen White
Some patterns come in the form of an EPS file, but in order for the pattern file to work in Photoshop, you’ll have to convert it to a PAT file. Here’s a foolproof way to do that.
- You cannot open EPS files in Photoshop Elements.
- This tutorial is for Adobe Photoshop only.
- There is no video or manual for this lesson.
Click here to download the EPS files.
- Open an EPS file in Adobe Photoshop.
- In the dialog box, click OK to accept the default settings.

Define a Pattern
- In the Menu Bar, choose Edit > Define Pattern.
- In the dialog box, name the pattern and click OK.
TIP: I’d recommend keeping the same name as the original. - Repeat the instructions for any additional EPS files in a set.

Export a Pattern
- In the Patterns panel, the new pattern (PAT) file will appear at the bottom of the list of patterns. Click on it to select it. To save a set of patterns, hold down the Ctrl key (Mac: Cmd key) to select more than one.
- In the panel menu, choose Export Selected Patterns.
- In the dialog box, name the pattern set and commit the change.
