What do YOU use the Lasso tool for?
In Photoshop & Photoshop Elements, there are three tools with the word “Lasso” in them. The Lasso Tool (no other words) is the one that leaves a line of marching ants wherever you click and drag your mouse, like this:
The selection tools in Photoshop are intended to be used in tandem with each other, but on their own, they have a bazillion uses. Here are two of my favorite and most practical ways to use the Lasso Tool:
Lasso Tool Use #1: Extracting Part of an Element
Sometimes I just want part of an element. This is especially useful for scatters and leafy stems. To do this, I first select the part I want from the element. Then, I copy and paste those selected pixels onto my document.
Lasso Tool Use #2: Extracting Alphas from Composite Images
Some designers provide alphas individually, while others put all letters of the alpha into one large PNG file. Using the Lasso Tool to copy and paste individual letters on my document makes the process easy.
