Bevel and Emboss – Letterpressed Type

I love the look of letterpress invitations. Letterpress involves the pressing of inked letters into a paper, creating an embedded look. It sounds complicated, but is actually fairly easy to accomplish on the computer.

Step 1: Open Your Layout

This is the layout I created with the November Premier kit, Christmas Past, by ScrapKitchen Designs.

Step 2: Insert Title

  • Get the Horizontal Type tool.
  • Type your title.
  • Change the size, angle and color of the font in the Options Bar. I chose Wide Latin for the font, 27 px for the size and a nice brown for the color.

  • Press Enter to accept the changes.

Step 3: Bevel and Emboss your Title

  • In the Effects panel, click on Layer Styles (2nd icon) and choose Bevels from the menu. Double click on Simple Emboss.

  • Double click on the 'fx' next to your title in the Layers panel.
  • In the Style Settings dialog box, choose the following: Size: 5, Direction: Down.

  • Click OK to accept these values.

And you are done!

  • In the pop up window, change the following:

Style: emboss

Technique: smooth

Depth: 100%

Direction: down

Size: 5

Soften: 0

  • Click OK to accept these values.

And you are done!
