Puppy Dog Eyes – Fix the Glow

with No Comments

JenWhiteTOTW_shadowSince the release of the camera flashbulb in 1930,
one thing has plagued puppy dog photos everywhere…the dreaded glow.

Dogs (and other animals) have a special layer in their eyes that reflects light. This reflective layer is what helps them to see in low light conditions.

Photoshop Element’s Red Eye tool is rendered useless in this type of a situation, however. It is only meant to heal human eyes. Fortunately there are some work-arounds. In this tutorial, I will show you one very simple way to fix the glow from puppy dog eyes.

Tutorial:

For Adobe Photoshop Version click here.

Step 1: Open Photo

  • Open (File > Open) a photo of a puppy dog with glowing eyes.
  • Get the Zoom tool.
  • In the Options Bar, un-check Zoom All Windows.
  • On the photo, click and drag out a rectangle around the eyes of the puppy dog.

Step 2: Select Eyes

  • Get the Elliptical Marquee tool.
  • In the Options Bar, choose the Add To Selection icon. This way we will be able to select and work on both eyes at the same time.
  • In the Options Bar, enter 2 px for Feather. Feathering gives any selection a nice soft look. Mode should be Normal.

  • Click and drag a selection outline around one eye. The outline should be slightly larger than the glowing area.
Hint: Hold down the Shift key to maintain a strictly circular shape and/or press the Space Bar to reposition while dragging.
  • Click and drag a selection around the other eye. At this point both eyes should have a selection outline around them.

Step 3: Adjust Color

  • In the Menu Bar, choose Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color. The eyes should now be light grey.
  • Choose Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Levels.
  • In the dialog box, drag the Shadows slider (black) to the right until the eye is black with white highlights. Click OK.

Step 4: Soften

  • In the Menu Bar, choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
  • In the dialog box, enter 1.0 pixels. Click OK.
  • Choose Select > Deselect.

Step 5: Save

  • Save (File > Save As) the photo as a JPEG file with a unique name.
  • Pat yourself on the back! Your precious puppy dog photo is now scrap worthy.
