Dad was a man of few words. I don’t ever remember him giving me any sage advice. He set a good example by the way he lived his life. He was hardworking, honest, gentle and kind. He loved Mom deeply and would come in from the fields covered in dust and try to give her a hug while calling her “Flora, my Little Flower”. I used to love that since it made me feel safe and secure and it showed a playful side of Dad that he didn’t often show.As us kids grew up and left one-by-one, there was nothing he loved more than a family get-together. He would play cards with the “boys” and show up for dinner when called. But he pretty much stayed in the background.I just assumed he would always be there. But of course that’s not the way life is. I wish I could go back and spend just one day with him. I’d ask questions, and I’d listen - carefully.
